PAVILION | UNITED KINGDOM MEET THE UK’S NUCLEAR SECTOR AT WNE2021

First power The United Kingdom started up its first nuclear power station, the 50MW Calder Hall, at Windscale, England, in 1956.

NUCLEAR SITES As an early nuclear user almost all the UK’s current nuclear stations are set to shut down in the next five years, leaving just Sizewell B in operation. Sizewell B started up in 1995 and the next plant, Hinkley Point C, now under construction, will be the first new plant for over a quarter of a century.

 Dounreay A search process to identify locations for new

nuclear stations in 2011 named eight existing sites - Bradwell, Hartlepool, Heysham, Hinkley Point, Oldbury, Sellafield, Sizewell, and Wylfa. Scottish sites at Hunterston and Torness were excluded, as the Scottish Government has a no nuclear policy.

NUCLEAR GENERATORS At the peak in 1997, 26% of the nation’s electricity was generated from nuclear power. Since then several reactors have closed and by 2021 the share had declined to 19%.

BUILDING BLOCKS In October the UK government reiterated plans to replace Britain’s existing reactors, which (apart from Sizewell B) will close in the next few years, and ensure that Final Investment Decision can be taken on a new plant by the end of this parliament. It began negotiations

Mott MacDonald says “Our approach to nuclear projects is

We do need to go forward with more nuclear power. I do think it should be part of our baseload, a big

part. And that’s why yes, of course, we’re looking at Wylfa and lots of other projects.”

based on stress-tested delivery capability – recognising the technologies and uncertainties that are often associated with nuclear projects and programmes.” Its services cover fusion, small nuclear reactors, decommissioning, plant life extension, waste, ventilation, reprocessing, information and cyber security, and other research.

NUCLEAR NEW-BUILD Hinkley Point C poured its first concrete in March 2017. The owner, EDF Energy, has argued strongly that the UK government should take decisions in the short term on whether to build a similar unit at Sizewell C, so that plant can benefit from a ‘series build’ effect with expert teams transferred from Hinkley Point. Meanwhile the government has expressed support for construction of small modular reactors, and committed £210 million in development funding for a Rolls Royce SMR design. The Office for Nuclear Regulation has said it is ready for designs to be submitted into its licensing process.
