Shania has not only been instrumental in expanding and improving service provision at Bannside Pharmacy, Portglenone, she has also driven the adoption of a range of new technologies aimed at improving efficiencies and she consistently shares her learnings with others.

“Shania has impressively and consistently improved and developed herself above and beyond what is expected professionally in just three years on the pharmaceutical register. She has subsequently had a significant impact on our pharmacy service offering, pharmacy team development and customer service,” said Eoghan O’Brien, Superintendent Pharmacist at Bannside Pharmacy.

A leader in service delivery

Always ahead of the curve when it comes to service development and embracing practical innovations, Shania has spent the past three years upskilling herself in a range of areas, making a real difference to the lives of patients and the wider team at Bannside Pharmacy.

In her first year on the register, Shania started independent prescribing training. She now uses her qualification at every opportunity for Pharmacy First, sore throat and urinary tract infection consultations as well as private prescribing for period delay medication. She also qualified in earwax microsuction in her pre-reg year, and completed training for a more advanced ear cleaning system after registration. On top of this, she is now trained to deliver cryotherapy for wart, verruca and skin tag removal, vitamin B12 injections and blood testing from a venous sample. She consistently goes above and beyond what is expected of her to meet the needs of her patients. On a Saturday in November, Shania stayed in the pharmacy after it had closed to wait for a prescription to come through for a 94 year old patient.

“My mum is bedbound and gets numerous infections which causes her to get delirium. After making numerous calls to the doctors they agreed they would fax the prescription to Bannside Pharmacy. My wife went to the pharmacy about 5.55pm and spoke with Shania. She waited with my wife until the fax came through, about 30 minutes after closing. We are very grateful to Shania for going above and beyond what could be reasonably expected and will be eternally grateful,” said Eamon Kearney.

Driving innovation

As well as improving the services on offer at Bannside Pharmacy, Shania has also spearheaded its innovation agenda. As the first Northern Ireland pharmacy to move to Titan PMR, Shania was the primary catalyst in establishing this new platform. She worked many additional hours after closing time, without being asked, to help adapt the English PMR system to meet the specific requirements of Northern Ireland.

She was instrumental in adapting the dispensing workflow for the entire pharmacy team and bringing them willingly on board. She also shares her learnings with other pharmacies when they want to see how the PMR system works in practice.

The pharmacy recently received a Digital Transformation Flexible Fund grant covering 70% of the cost to set up its own white label Charac app, which can be used by patients to make appointments, have remote consultations and make purchases. The app comes with a suite of travel vaccine PGDs. Shania has taken the lead in setting up a travel vaccine clinic and transferring the appointments from the pharmacy’s existing system to the new platform, while signing off all the PGDs.

Supporting the wider team

As a visionary for pharmacy, Shania actively takes the lead in passing on what she has learned in innovation, services and delivering excellent patient care to pharmacy students, trainees and other team members. She has successfully trained and developed 21 students and supported colleague Eileen Caldwell-Morrow to achieve her NVQ Level 3 Pharmacy Technician.

“I had the pleasure and the support of Shania while doing my two year Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician course and I have to say she was a great support to me during this time. I appreciate what she has done for me and the help she gives me, even after I have finished the course,” said Eileen.

“I am personally incredibly grateful for the support, encouragement and mentorship Shania has provided me as my educational supervisor throughout my foundation training year over the past six months. Throughout my time working with Shania, she has always gone above and beyond her role for both the staff and patients. What particularly stands out to me is her commitment to supporting the entire Bannside team. She does so by leading by example and showing integrity and consistency in everything she does,” said Emma Craig, MPharm.

“As a visionary for pharmacy, Shania actively takes the lead in passing on what she has learned in innovation, services and delivering excellent patient care to pharmacy students, trainees and other team members...”

Shania’s commitment to services, innovation and knowledge sharing is helping to continually advance the role of community pharmacy within the wider healthcare service. If she has achieved this much in three years, just imagine what she can go on to achieve in her future career.
