COMMUNITY PHARMACY SCOTLAND CORNER

EXCITING TIMES LIE AHEAD FOR COMMUNITY PHARMACY IN SCOTLAND

At Community Pharmacy Scotland (CPS) we are preparing to launch our Mission, Vision and Strategy and our 2026 manifesto setting out our key policy ambitions ahead of the 2026 Scottish Parliament election.

CPS’s manifesto identifies seven priority areas that we believe political parties must commit to if they are serious about strengthening community pharmacy services.

By investing in these areas, Scotland’s network of pharmacies can play a central role in supporting NHS transformation and delivering a healthier nation.

CPS make the case for how pharmacy teams are ideally positioned to prevent, detect and treat ill health, helping to address some of the country’s most urgent public health challenges.

From diabetes and cardiovascular disease to obesity-related conditions and the unacceptable toll of drug-related deaths, our teams have the skills and accessibility to make a measurable difference. With the right investment in infrastructure and funding, we can deliver this

change efficiently and effectively. Early intervention, trusted relationships and easily accessible care are all proven to improve outcomes. Community pharmacy is in a unique position to deliver on all three.

CPS’s top seven policy priorities 1. Commission the community pharmacy network to deliver a national NHS weight loss service, with a focus on the direct use of medicines.

2. Establish a national substance use service with centralised funding, ensuring consistent commissioning across Scotland so pharmacy teams can provide the interventions that best protect vulnerable people.

3. Commission the community pharmacy network to deliver a targeted diabetes screening programme, with clear NHS referral pathways to support those at risk to make sustainable lifestyle changes.

4. Commission targeted cardiovascular screening through community pharmacy for populations most at risk.

5. Further invest in NHS Pharmacy First Scotland to expand treatment protocols and widen the prescribing element.

6. Commission a comprehensive range of women’s health services through community pharmacy, improving access to medicines, advice and choice.

7. Prioritise investment in digital infrastructure and information sharing between healthcare providers to enable a meaningful shift from secondary to primary care.

Our manifesto reflects our commitment to the people of Scotland and our determination to lead change that delivers measurable health improvements.

We call on policymakers to recognise the power of community pharmacy as an essential part of the foundation for a healthier, fairer Scotland.

We will be releasing the manifesto in the coming weeks, so please watch out for more detail.
