INSIDE THE FIRST FOUNDATION PRESCRIBER YEAR

This year marks a significant moment for pharmacy in Scotland as students begin their Foundation Training with something new on the horizon - becoming qualified prescribers.

A

mong the first cohort to undertake this exciting path is Amy Biggans, a motivated trainee with a strong sense of purpose as

she embarks on her placement with Right Medicine Pharmacy.

Over the next few months, Scottish Pharmacy Magazine will follow Amy’s journey, offering an inside look at the reality of training as one of Scotland’s first Foundation Year prescribers. Speaking before her first day, Amy’s enthusiasm is contagious.

“I am excited to get started and apply what I have learned over the past four years into practice,” she says. “There’s a little nervousness too - especially about balancing full-time work with study, but I know I will be well supported throughout.”

Amy is especially eager to get involved with the team and make a real connection with the community. “I’m most looking forward to

becoming part of the pharmacy team and building strong, positive relationships with patients,” she shares.

Like many trainees, the upcoming registration exam is at the forefront of her mind, but she is already preparing to meet it with focus and structure. “That’s the thing that keeps me up at night,” she admits. “But I know preparation is key, and being organised will help ease the anxiety.”

Support and advice from recently qualified pharmacists have already made an impression on Amy. “They have all told me not to struggle alone and to use the expertise around me. That really stuck with me, it’s a team effort, and I will definitely be leaning into that.”

What makes Amy’s year even more unique is the prescribing element, which is still evolving. That sense of the unknown isn’t daunting to her, it is

inspiring. “I am really curious about how prescribing will work in a community setting and how it differs from PGDs. Being in the first cohort, no one really knows yet how it will be integrated.”

Outside of pharmacy, Amy values keeping a healthy work/life balance. Long walks with her two spaniels and coffee dates with friends help her reset, along with fresh air and routine.

Looking ahead, she’s clear about what she hopes to achieve by the end of the year. “I want to contribute positively to my team, develop my clinical knowledge and build confidence in decision-making, so that I am ready to qualify as a prescribing pharmacist.”

And her advice to future students? “Be excited! This is such an incredible time to join the profession. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You are not expected to know everything - just to be ready to learn.”
