THE DEGREE RESPONDS DIRECTLY TO CALLS FROM PHARMACY TECHNICIANS FOR MORE FORMAL CLINICAL TRAINING

strategies will be taught. The development of leadership skills and the ability to manage advanced pharmacy services by embedding reflective practice will also be explored. Students will also learn how to conduct continuous quality improvement in pharmaceutical care and services.

Assessment blends written exams, e-portfolios and oral assessment; the target is for graduates to operate at SCQF 10, aligned with other allied- health degrees.

What the Course Offers • A well-rounded clinical curriculum essential for advanced clinical practice, including patient-centred pharmaceutical care, clinical therapeutics and health promotion.

• Online learning through RGU’s Moodle platform, accessible via laptop or mobile, with 24/7 online access to learning material and resources.

• Flexibility to study at your own pace and fit coursework around your job and personal life.

• Expert tuition from experienced academic staff, including GPhC-registered pharmacists.

Voices from the faculty Launching the course, Professor Susannah Walsh, Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Applied Sciences and Public Health, said RGU is, "committed to providing innovative and relevant educational opportunities that meet the needs of the evolving healthcare sector and expanding scope. This BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice for Pharmacy Technicians is a testament to our ongoing dedication to advancing healthcare education and supporting the professional growth of our students.”

Dr Graeme Kay, Associate Dean for Economic, Social and Cultural Development with the School of Pharmacy, Applied Sciences and Public Health emphasised this milestone, “RGU will be the first higher education institution in the UK to offer a pharmacy related degree qualification to pharmacy technicians, a significant milestone in the education of pharmacy technicians.”

Dr Betty Dube, the Course Development Lead added that the aim is to, “address the ever- evolving needs of the pharmacy profession. Our

goal is to empower pharmacy technicians with the clinical knowledge and skills they need to excel in their careers and contribute to the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care.”

What will graduates be able to do? The curriculum promises competence across prescribing-adjacent tasks that pharmacists may soon delegate. These include: • Independent medicines-optimisation reviews • Clinical monitoring and interpretation of laboratory data

• Public-health interventions in smoking cessation, weight management and contraception

• Leadership of continuous-quality- improvement projects within dispensaries

RGU says the honours qualification “will provide advanced knowledge across the four pillars of practice” and prepare technicians for specialist or leadership posts.

For 2025-26 the University will accept entrants at Stage 3 only. Applicants must hold an SCQF 8 SVQ in Pharmacy Services (or equivalent), have two years on the GPhC register (or equivalent), be practising pharmacy technicians and evidence at least 14 hours’ practice per week.

RGU’s fully online format means no relocation is required, easing uptake for rural boards where technician development pathways have lagged.

The bottom line RGU’s BSc is a strategic response to accelerating policy shifts that demand a fresh pharmacy skill mix. For technicians, the course offers a credible route to advanced clinical roles and parity of esteem within multidisciplinary teams. For employers, it could unlock efficiencies promised by supervision reform - provided funding follows aspiration.
