ON THE GROUND: LIFE IN PHARMACY WITH MEGAN
From counter assistant to technician-in-training, Megan describes a typical day in Barnton Pharmacy
F
or Megan, working in pharmacy has always been about curiosity and care. “I was interested in how medications work
and what they’re used for,” she says, reflecting on what first drew her into the sector.
Now three years into her journey, that early interest has grown into a genuine passion for patient care. Starting out with her counter and dispensing courses, Megan is now training to become a pharmacy technician and loving the challenge.
A typical day is fast-paced and full of variety. “No two days are the same. You never know what the day ahead might bring,” Megan says.
A typical day might involve labelling prescriptions, managing stock, sourcing alternatives for out-of- stock medicines, or carrying out patient consultations. “It’s busy, but exciting, there’s always something to learn.”
Working on the counter remains one of the highlights for Megan. “I love the interactions

with patients – and I’m always learning during consultations.”
One encounter that has stayed with her involved supporting a patient whose wife had passed away “It reminded me how much trust people place in us, not just for medicine, but for kindness and support.”
That trust however is not always automatic. “As I’m young and my badge says ‘trainee,’ some patients assume I’m less qualified,” she explains.
“But once we start talking and I help them out, I think they realise I know more than they expected. It’s about showing them what I can do.”
Behind the scenes, there’s a lot that patients don’t see. “We go above and beyond every day - chasing prescriptions from surgeries, finding suitable alternatives when medications are unavailable. We do everything we can to make sure no one goes without. A lot of that effort goes unnoticed, but it really matters.”
Teamwork is essential, especially during busy periods.
“Each morning, we write out our daily roles on the board and check in with each other. We also make sure everyone takes proper breaks. It helps with staying focused and avoiding burnout.”
Megan credits her training courses with building her confidence and clinical knowledge - and her team for constantly encouraging her to grow.
“The counter and dispensing course helped me build confidence when speaking to patients. The technician training has deepened my understanding of medicines and clinical conditions.”
Her advice for anyone considering the career? “It can be challenging, but it’s so rewarding. You make a real difference. That’s what makes it worth it.”
And when the day is done? “I like to visit family, go for a walk or just relax with a good film.”
IT CAN BE CHALLENGING, BUT IT’S SO REWARDING. YOU MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE. THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT WORTH IT
