INNOVATION IN COMMUNITY PHARMACY PRACTICE

WALLACETOWN PHARMACY, DUNDEE, ANGUS When the main facility of Dundee Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service (DDARS) flooded, the pharmacy’s innovative and resilient approach ensured uninterrupted patient care by temporarily storing and providing controlled access to medications. When a local GP surgery relocated, the pharmacy communicated with patients, promoting the Pharmacy First Plus, serial prescribing and medicine collection service. These initiatives fostered stronger community relationships and ensured continued access to healthcare amidst uncertainty.

CRAIGNEUK PHARMACY, AIRDRIE, LANARKSHIRE Team Craigneuk demonstrated adaptability and innovation by enhancing the capacity of their VBM DDS dispensing robot, aiming to improve pharmacy services and patient care. They underwent comprehensive training and shadowed similar robots in other pharmacies. Positive leadership and teamwork enabled staff to gain confidence with the new technology and workflow and ensure timely medication delivery. These practices increased operational efficiency, fostered workforce development, and enhanced patient satisfaction.

MINT PHARMACY & TRAVEL CLINIC, COATBRIDGE Mint Pharmacy has revolutionized community pharmacy practice by implementing an advanced Robotic Dispensing System (RDS) and a 24-hour prescription collection service. The pharmacy has hired additional staff and implemented new procedures to ensure operational efficiency and excellent patient care. These innovations have significantly reduced error rates, improved prescription turnaround times, and expanded patient access to pharmaceutical care, enhancing staff morale and overall community health outcomes.

DICKSON CHEMIST, RUTHERGLEN, GLASGOW Stephen and Nadine showcased their innovation by implementing the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Service - with a specific focus on alleviating long COVID symptoms among their patients. After comprehensive training in Aberdeen, Nadine obtained certification as a hyperbaric chamber operator. The pharmacy’s service – the first in Scotland - has benefited patients dealing with long COVID and aided the recovery of a local swimming champion from injury.
