NAVIGATING WINTER ILLNESSES
As winter continues, the incidence of various illnesses rises significantly. While some ailments are mere inconveniences, others can pose serious health threats.
I
n this article, we take a look at these conditions and the pharmacological treatments available.
Illnesses and treatments Flu (Influenza) Influenza, or the flu, is a respiratory virus notorious for causing fever, headaches, muscle aches, and profound fatigue. It can severely impact people of all ages, particularly the immunocompromised, the elderly, and children. Pharmacological intervention with antivirals such as oral oseltamivir (Tamiflu), inhaled zanamivir (Relenza), and IV peramivir (Rapivab) is recommended within the first 48 hours of symptom onset to reduce duration and severity. Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza), a newer antiviral, is also effective, especially when administered within two days of symptom onset.
Norovirus The norovirus, often dubbed the winter vomiting bug, is a highly infectious agent leading to gastrointestinal distress, characterized by vomiting and diarrhoea. Treatment is primarily supportive, focusing on hydration to counteract the fluid and electrolyte loss. While no specific antivirals are available, maintaining hydration and electrolyte balance is crucial to recovery.
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) RSV is a common viral infection that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. However, it can escalate to serious lung infections in vulnerable populations such as young children and older adults. Most cases resolve with symptomatic treatment, but in severe instances, such as in young infants or immunocompromised individuals, the antiviral ribavirin may be administered.
Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a bacterial infection that triggers violent coughing fits, potentially fatal for infants and those with weakened immune systems. It is often known as the ‘100-day cough’ due to how long it can last. If the cough worsens, people can make a whooping sound as they gasp for air in between coughs. Macrolides, such as azithromycin, are the cornerstone of pertussis treatment, helping to alleviate symptoms and curb the spread of infection. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are critical for reducing morbidity.
Scarlet Fever Scarlet fever is a bacterial illness that mainly affects children. It causes a distinctive
