Circulations Areas
Walkways are normally on the perimeter of a building, but corridors usually run internally and may have little or no natural light, therefore require effective illumination at around 100 lux. Ceiling height and corridor width will affect the lighting design and careful spacing of luminaires particularly around entrances and doors, will be required to provide a well-lit environment and eliminate shadowing and glare. Long corridors can be problematic in eliminating glare, diffused luminaires are preferable rather than small bright pools of light.
Lighting controls can be used to reduce lighting levels without compromising safety, to improve energy efficiency and to work with the natural daylight available. Careful lighting design should ensure gradual transitions between different spaces, particularly where there is a change of level to negotiate, e.g. stairs or steps where glare can be a hazard. The top and bottom step of a flight of stairs must be clearly lit to indicate where stairs begin and end, light shining downwards from the top to the bottom. Treads should be lit at 100 lux and the risers kept in shadow. Glare needs to be controlled, luminaires with suitable diffusers and a luminance no greater than 300 cd/m2

Emergency lighting also needs to be carefully considered in high transit areas such as corridors, in particular at changes of level, direction and over exit route doors.
Lighting Guide 9 also recommends that corridor lighting should be dimmable reverting to full illuminance when activated by presence detection. The lighting design should avoid both shadowing and glare to prevent confusion of the occupant. Luminaires with an integral corridor function fitted would allow for constant low level illumination, changing to high level lighting when movement is detected
