Public Areas
Public spaces such as waiting areas need to be calm and relaxing to cater for both patients and visitors who may be distressed. Bright and uniformed lighting would be appropriate in food and beverage areas with lower levels of lighting for comfortable seating areas at 200 lux on floor level. Accent or feature lighting will enhance the visual quality of the space. The Reception is primarily a work space so needs to be lit accordingly with a maintained illuminance between 300 to 500 lux depending on the time of day.

Circulation Spaces
Healthcare buildings by nature have many forms of circulation spaces and corridors. Circulation spaces should be lit to approx. 200 lux during the day and reduced at night with corridors and stairs lit to 150 lux, again reduced at night using sensors and lighting controls. Uniform illumination levels using low glare luminaires should be considered to ensure patient comfort when in transit with line of sight being direct to the ceiling plane. The installation should also be capable of operating at a reduced level at night for comfort and energy efficiency. Stairs should be lit to 150 lux on landings, 100 lux on all other steps.
