Wards and General Clinical Areas
Lighting requirements become more complex and reference to table 1 should be made. LG2 states that wards are complex spaces and require the illuminance values from 5 lux for night lighting through to 1000 lux for patient examination and a colour rendering quality of ≥Ra90, but within most general clinical areas, the level of colour rendition needs only to be provided to the immediate task area. General lighting should be at 100 lux at floor level, 300 lux for reading at bedhead level and general bed level for nursing care and also provision made for a watch light at between 15–20 lux. Lighting levels within wards should meet multiple functions, spaces used for recovery should use natural light where possible and glare controlled, particularly for patients in a reclined position.
Clinical areas are where patients are treated, and examples include consulting and treatment rooms where specific task lighting will be required. LG2 recommends 300–500 lux for examination and treatment, but the welfare of the patient also needs to be considered and an element of comfort should be strived for by the lighting design. Lighting controls can help to provide ambient light levels and luminaires that are easy to clean should be considered along with relevant IP ratings. Professional lighting design is crucial in these healthcare areas.
