CSSA Young Leaders Council: Still Growing Strong!

On

April 21, 2021, we held another successful Young Leaders Council event!

We had the hon- Steven Scott

our of welcoming Ste- ven Scott as our guest speaker to the virtual spotlight. The Cana- dian Young Leaders listened intensely to Scott’s words of wis- dom and great advice. We soaked up the in-

formation he gave us like sponges in water, and so many of us are super excited to implement some of his suggestions in our own self-storage worlds.

Scott, chairman and CEO of StorageVault

Canada, is the current treasurer of the Canadi- an Self Storage Association (CSSA) and a direc- tor on the CSSA Board. He shared his knowledge and experiences with the young leaders of the self-storage industry, as well as the changes we have faced in the past year with the rip- ple effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these changes include the fact that we have advanced our technology knowledge and ad- vantages sooner than it would have without this pandemic. A great discussion ensued with regard to the advancement of our front lines with customer service in self-storage becom- ing even more hands off. We learned that small changes can have big impacts, just like the de- velopment of online rentals and check-in prac- tices. Scott pointed out that, as young leaders, we are the millennial generation and seem to be adapting to the changes quickly. The point was also made that even the baby boomers,

while enjoying a cup of coffee at home, are being forced to learn and figure out the simplicity of online services that we take for granted. The good news is that there is now no generation left behind for any advance- ment moving forward.

Scott also stressed the importance of having a good website that

speaks for your business and contains as much information as possible. We are now seeing websites with space calculators, pricing promotions, actual site photos, videos, online payments, rentals, move-ins, and much more. This enables our customer to be able to share the experience with- out having to be at the storage facility office in person. It is believed that we would still be very much behind the times with these customer ben- efits had it not been for COVID-19. These types of update features on your self-storage website will educate your customers about their choices and size ranges and let them make smart decisions based on their needs. This information was very exciting to hear, especially looking back in time. Ac- cording to Scott, it really is terrific how marketing has changed, from ads in the Yellow Pages and simple facility signs to multiple avenues of Google leads, social media, and interacting with customers before they even visit the facility gate.

All in all, this CSSA Virtual Young Leaders Council event was a huge

success, with over 30 Young Leaders in attendance. We would like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation to the generous sponsors of the 2021 Young Leaders Council: Hans Matthey with Janus International Group, Bliss Edwards with SmartStop Self Storage, and Natasha Mousseau with Tripemco Insurance Group. It was great to see you again at this meet- ing, and thank you for sharing your information with us as well.
