self-storage industry. ABR not only works with some of the industry’s biggest names, like CubeSmart, Extra Space Stor- age, and Public Storage, but with large retailers like Home Depot and 7-Eleven as well. “When you actively value your employees, and they can see the impact of their work in the community, they will take care of you. We’re very fortunate to have worked with such large companies in both the retail and self-storage space and are grateful for the opportunity that’s afforded us to support our community and employees in turn.”

nonprofit, Charity Storage. This unique nonprofit allows them to multiply their support across the industry and a cause close to their hearts, with contributions split across local charities chosen by self-storage facility staff, Kure It Cancer Research, and the Self Storage Association Foundation.

Jamey, a former Charity Storage

board member, shares why he was first drawn to the nonprofit. “Jon and I have been actively involved with Charity Storage since 2016,” he says. “I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work closely with Char- ity Storage’s Co-founder Barry Hoeven and was able to really understand his vision for the program. Cancer has had a major impact in my life and on my family, so getting behind Barry’s idea was an easy way to fight back. When I had the opportunity to work with Charity Storage, I jumped at the chance. It was an honor to serve on the board of such a great nonprofit, and I’m proud of the growth the orga- nization has seen since its inception.”

Jon recently took up the mantle—both at

ABR and on the Charity Storage board. He assumed the role of ABR president in January of 2023, and was officially voted onto the nonprofit’s board of directors in April of this year. “I can tell how important this nonprofit is to the self-storage industry, its participants, and the hundreds of charities it supports,” says Jon. “I am excited to be a part of a great team and help Barry’s vision become a reality. Being able to support Charity Storage and simultaneously support Kure It Cancer Research, two organiza- tions that are working towards a better future for all communities across the nation, really means a lot to the team at ABR.”

your community is an area no company should undervalue. “We’re successful because people trust us. People trust our staff to be consistent, to care, and to be committed to delivering a high- quality product. We’ve earned our community’s trust and support by giving back and being true to our word. It sounds so simple, but giving back is one of the most powerful and rewarding activi- ties a company can participate in,” says Jamey.

Over the years, ABR has cultivated a loyal customer base both within and beyond the

About Charity Storage Charity Storage was conceived by Lance Watkins, who had first-hand experience with the storage industry and with the reality television show “Storage Wars.” The late Barry Hoeven, founder of West- port Properties, co-founded Charity Storage, bringing many years of self- storage and philanthropy experience to the endeavor. Today, Charity Storage is an independent 501(c)3 national self-storage industry nonprofit that is supported by many self-storage owners, operators, management companies, industry associ- ations, organizations, and vendors. Ninety percent of all funds raised are distributed to qualifying charitable organizations (60 percent to the charity chosen by the operator/facility, 20 percent to Kure It Cancer Research, and 10 percent to the Self-Storage Association Foundation [SSAF] Scholarship Program).

Charity Storage utilizes existing stor-

age facility operations to raise funds to support charities throughout the United States. Donated and abandoned items are placed into a vacant unit and the contents are auctioned off on site or online via StorageTreasures.com or other online auction platforms. Operators online with StorageTreasures.com can opt-in via their account dashboard today and start selling charity units immediately.

Mario Macaluso is the co-founder of the SBOA Tenant Insurance program and founder of Best Self Storage Insurance, LLC. Macaluso is also a board member of Charity Storage and volun- teers as the program manager to support and grow participation for Charity Storage.
