NEWS AGAINST POLICE STOP RACISM
The Police Federation is calling for tougher measures to tackle racist abuse directed at officers, as new figures suggest the scale of hate crime against police staff is significantly underreported
Humberside Police Federation launched a campaign, Stop Racism Against Police, in November, urging forces to improve the reporting and recording of hate crime and to introduce a specific category for racially motivated abuse against officers. The Federation says the issue has been allowed to persist for too long. While more local branches have got on board to back the campaign, it requires a coordinated national response. is likely to be considerably higher. In the most recent financial year, 3,648 hate crimes were recorded nationally, including 31 in Humberside. The Metropolitan Police reported 1,407 incidents, while other major forces such as Police Scotland and Greater Manchester Police did not supply figures. Humberside Police Federation Chair Lee Sims said it was “truly disgusting” officers and staff from ethnic minority backgrounds were still facing racist abuse while carrying out their duties. He said: “Every assault on a police officer is horrendous and it is unacceptable that a police officer is assaulted every 10 minutes in the UK. However, we have also found that officers from an ethnic minority background are being targeted for assaults and abuse simply because of the colour of their skin. One of our own officers was assaulted by a person who said they attacked him because he was not white. That is unacceptable. One incident like this is one too many. Our colleagues do not come to work to suffer hate crime.” Lee added some officers felt there was “no point reporting it” and said the Federation would be writing to local MPs to seek support. “There is no place for racism. We all need to stand together,” he added.
