A routine flight from Tenerife to Gatwick on 13 March 2023 became a mid-air emergency when a severely intoxicated passenger turned violent, attacking his wife and threatening passengers and crew. Three off duty Sussex Police officers - PS Owen (right), PC Bernard (far right) and Special Constable Julius Gudaitis (top) - along
found a well known, highly volatile man who had self-harmed, smashed windows and was threatening the public. The situation escalated when he activated a chainsaw and began swinging it inside the property and towards officers through broken windows. PS Williams, acting as Bronze Inspector, took control of the scene, directing officers and engaging the man despite the immediate danger. Recognising the threat, he deployed his Taser through a smashed window. As the Taser took effect, PC Reynolds forced entry, seized the still-running chainsaw and detained the man. Moments earlier, PC Green had attempted to reason with the suspect and supported Williams with his Taser red dot during the critical moments. Their actions brought a highly dangerous incident to a safe conclusion and prevented serious harm to the public and officers.
