POLICE FEDERATION BRAVERY AWARDS 2026


HUMBERSIDE PC Gareth Stephenson and PCSOs Barrie Clark and Rebecca Smith rescued a man from a burning vehicle on the A180 in August 2025.


They were driving home after a 12-hour shift when a car sped past them at more than 100 miles per hour. Moments later,


they found the same vehicle overturned in a field and on fire. They stopped on the live carriageway and ran to the wreckage, where the driver was trapped inside. Working together, they forced open the door and pulled him free as flames intensified around them. The man, who was intoxicated and combative, repeatedly told them to leave him, but they dragged him to safety near the roadside barriers.


PC Stephenson contacted


the Force Control Room and provided updates while the officers gave first aid and kept bystanders back.


Their swift and selfless actions saved the driver’s life and prevented a serious incident from becoming a fatal one.


KENT PCs Sean Quinn, Ash Bates, Sophie Groves and Luke Isaacs officers (below) are being praised after a routine arrest in Maidstone turned into a violent knife attack that left one officer with multiple stab wounds.
