PAWS FOR CELEBRATION
Five dogs and their handlers were recognised at an event to honour the bravery of police dogs and the difference they make in fighting crime and keeping the public safe
More than 100 of the country’s bravest and most dedicated police dogs and handlers gathered at the annual Thin Blue Paw Awards in September. Five dogs and their handlers were recognised at the event. “This year’s winners are prime examples of the incredible bravery, strength, specialist skills, and dedication these wonderful dogs show every day when they head out to work, as well as the important role dog handlers play in helping police forces across the UK fight crime. This is our way of saying thank you,” said a spokesperson from Thin Blue Paw Awards. The Lifetime Achievement award went
to RPD Logan and PC Ian Sweeney of Humberside Police. The duo received the accolade after working together to keep the streets of Lincolnshire safe for more than seven years. RPD Logan completed his training in
a very quick eight weeks and went on to secure incredible arrests, save countless

lives, and help keep his community safe. He has received numerous awards and never missed a day’s work, even after being shot three times in the head while protecting PC Sweeney and detaining three dangerous armed criminals in 2018. PD Astro and PC Grace Feavyour from Leicestershire Police picked up the award for Outstanding Bravery. PD Astro showed true bravery and loyalty to his handler, PC Grace Feavyour, when he jumped to defend her during a confrontational arrest in 2021. The German Shepherd leapt into action when a man being detained turned on the young officer as he protected his colleague, and PD Astro was injured. But it didn’t deter him as he grabbed the suspect and held him until he was restrained. The Life Saver Award was presented
to RPD Luna, and PC Linda McBride from Police Scotland, who saved 38 lives during their eight-year career together. RPD Luna had a natural ability for
tracking particularly high-risk missing people, and led officers and first-aid responders to vulnerable people and suicidal individuals who needed urgent help; this included a kidnapping. PD Toro and PC Chris McDonough, from Cheshire and North Wales Police, were named the nation’s top Crime- fighting Duo. PC McDonough, from Merseyside, and Dutch Herder PD Toro have shown themselves to be a ‘formidable crimefighting duo’ in just two- and-a-half-years working together with tremendous success. Greater Manchester Police pair PD Eddie and PC Andrew Kenyon received the Rising Star award after showing their natural talent and commitment to duty in their first 18 months on the streets. They’ve made more than 60 arrests and
assisted in serious jobs, such as protecting a colleague who was attacked and catching dangerous criminals.
