ANNUAL LEAVE ADVICE DID YOU KNOW? Do you know what your entitlements are? Advice on working public holidays

Did you know you are entitled to a day’s paid leave on each public holiday subject to the exigencies of duty? A day’s paid leave counts as a period of duty of eight hours. However, in the case of officers who work part-time each day will have a pro-rata value according to their agreed hours of duty, for example:

• If an officer works 20 hours per week (50%) they are entitled to four hours’

• If a part-time officer works 32 hours per week (80%) they are entitled to 6.4

paid leave for each public holiday hours’ paid leave for each public holiday

I’m working on a bank holiday, how much will I be paid? If you are a constable or sergeant, you will be paid double time for the hours you have worked.

30 | POLICE | DECEMBER 2022

If the period of duty carried out on the public holiday is less than four hours, the appropriate allowance will be paid for a minimum of four hours.

The bank holiday has fallen on my rest day, what happens now? When a bank holiday falls on your rest day, the bank holiday always takes precedence, but your rest day MUST be re-rostered to another day. The re-rostered day is a rest day and all conditions applying to rest days apply to it. Should you then be required to work on the bank holiday, you would get paid or have time off at the rate of double time – your choice.

What if I’m asked to work on a public holiday at short notice? If you are a constable or sergeant and less

than eight days’ notice is received, you are entitled to a payment of double time plus another day off in lieu. Also, a requirement to work on a public holiday with less than 15 days’ notice must be authorised by an officer of at least assistant chief constable rank.

What if I work into a bank holiday on a night shift? You are entitled to a minimum four hours at double time and a reallocated bank holiday. You should be notified of the reallocated date within four days of the notification, and this would be expected to be reallocated within the following three months. This applies only when you have less than eight days’ notice of the requirement. If it is more than eight days, the compensation is double time for the hours worked.
