MICHAEL WELFORD The former Thames Valley officer and NARPO member has joined three friends in a challenge to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Michael Welford has been a member of the Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club (MWSGC) for the past five years. In 2022, the club celebrated their 140th birthday and Michael, along with three fellow members and friends, felt it was appropriate to celebrate the club’s longevity while raising much-needed funds for a very worthy charity. The group decided that the challenge would be for each member of the team to complete 140 holes of golf in a week at clubs that predate MWSGC. Joining Michael for the challenge was Doug Hayhoe (Club Captain), Martyn Westbury (Seniors Vice Captain) and Jim Malarkey (Business Development

Officer). Michael suffers with an on-going heart condition, and another member of the team had previously suffered a heart attack, so the decision to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation was an easy one. The team spent five days in August
completing their challenge, starting with Royal Blackheath (created in 1608) before travelling to London Scottish and Royal Wimbledon (both 1875), Oxford (1875), Newbury and Crookham (1873), Bramshaw Forest Course(1865) and Royal North Devon (1864) before heading back to play the last 14 holes at their beloved MWSGC. Michael says: “The courses we played were varied and none of them were easy! It would be wrong of me to pick out a favourite, as they each gave us wonderful memories. Each course required a very different approach to play and each had unique features, including walkers regularly criss-crossing London Scottish, to horses nibbling the greens at Bramshaw and, numerous sheep grazing on the course at Royal North
Devon. It is fair to say that on completion of our challenge, we all felt that we had accomplished something unique and worthwhile. The 19th hole never so felt so well-earned! “We played what I call Clint Eastwood
Golf, a mixture of ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’, but although our golf may have been inconsistent, what was consistent throughout was the warm welcome we were afforded at every club. It was fascinating learning about the history of all the clubs and seeing their unique memorabilia and their Honours Boards.” To date, the team has raised an impressive £2,422 for the British Heart Foundation. All costs incurred for the challenge have been borne by the participants, meaning that all money raised is going directly to the charity.
The team is still raising money for BHF and if anyone would like to donate, go to:
