their service,” he said. “I was astonished to discover that unlike other countries, the UK had no national annual day to honour and promote the work of the emergency services. “We had a hugely successful Armed Forces Day, but nothing for our police and 999 heroes, despite there being 10 times more people serving in the emergency services than in our entire armed forces.” Tom presented a plan for Emergency Services Day

to 10 Downing Street and secured the support of the then-Prime Minister, Theresa May. “We had our first 999 Day in 2017 which launched with support from Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, His Majesty King Charles III, and HRH The Prince of Wales. We are so grateful that Prince William, himself a former air ambulance pilot, has visited first responders each 999 Day since I founded it,” continued Tom. “A simple conversation between a grandfather and a grandson led to the creation of this important day where we as a country come together – united in our support for our emergency services. As we have seen with Covid, it is a shame that it often takes a tragedy before we stop, pause, and reflect.”

SIX TIPS TO MANAGE STRESS

Feeling overwhelmed? Stress Awareness Week takes place in November, but stress occurs all year round. Flint House’s mental health team is here to help with some tips

1. MAKE A LIST If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of tasks you need to complete at work, or at home, then write a list. By breaking it down into easier chunks, things can appear clearer and less onerous. Make sure you give yourself credit for each task, and don’t forget to tick them off – this alone feels great.

2. ALLOW GOOD THOUGHTS Take a little time to think about the good things in your life. Every day take time to consider all the positives, and list three things you’re thankful for, so you have a visual reminder.

3. DOWNLOAD HEADSPACE Be kind to your mind. Luckily, there’s

the Headspace app. With guided lessons on mindfulness, sleep – and simply remembering to breathe, it’s the everyday app for feeling better and it’s just a tap away on your mobile phone.

4. KEEP ACTIVE Being active can help burn off nervous energy. Even a short burst of 10 minutes of brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood. Check out Flint House’s YouTube channel for some inspirational exercise videos.

5. KEEP TALKING Reach out to friends, family, work pals or a helpline. Talking about your problems can release pent-up feelings and it might help you to find a solution to the problem.

6. ASK FOR HELP

Flint House offers a caring, safe and compassionate environment in which to learn about common mental health conditions, including stress, anxiety and depression. We recognise that police officers hear and see things that others can turn away from and that this continued exposure can increase the risk of a mental health decline. Often, police officers prioritise the needs of others and do not always have the time and space to look after their own. The earlier you can seek help, the better.
