WHAT THE REGULATIONS SAY Police Regulations and Home Office guidance require forces to: 1. Make reasonable adjustments If you have a disability or long-term condition, the Equality Act 2010 requires forces to adjust working practices, duties, or environment where reasonable.


2. Base decisions on medical advice Occupational Health must guide decisions around what you can and cannot safely do. You should not be allocated duties that breach medical restrictions.

Review your status regularly Adjusted duties should be reviewed— typically every 3–6 months—based on updated medical information. 5. Support continued employment Forces should exhaust all reasonable adjustments before considering medical retirement.


3. Keep you informed If you’re placed on adjusted duties, you must receive clear communication explaining:


YOUR RIGHTS AS AN OFFICER ON ADJUSTED DUTIES


You have the right to reasonable adjustment.


If your condition meets the Equality Act definition of disability, your force must consider adjustments to help you stay in work.


You have the right to meaningful duties. You shouldn’t be sidelined, parked in a corner, or given no work. Adjusted duties must be genuine, productive tasks.


You have the right to full pay Being on adjusted duties does not reduce your pay.


You have the right to challenge or question decisions


If you believe your placement on adjusted duties is wrong—or if duties allocated don’t reflect medical advice - you can:


• Ask for clarification • Provide additional medical evidence • Request a review • Seek representation


You have the right to safe working conditions You cannot be required to undertake activities that conflict with medical recommendations or put you / colleagues at risk.


COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS – LET’S CLEAR THEM UP


X “Adjusted duties mean I’m being punished.”


No. Adjusted duties are a welfare measure, not a sanction.


X “If I go on adjusted duties, they’ll force me out.”


No. Regulations require forces to retain officers wherever possible. Medical retirement is the last resort.


X “My pay will drop.” No. Adjusted duties do not affect pay.


X “I can be told to do anything because I’m on adjusted duties.”


No. Tasks must reflect occupational health guidance and reasonable adjustments.


WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I’M PLACED ON ADJUSTED DUTIES?


• Check that duties match OH recommendations.


• Ask for the written rationale – you are entitled to understand the decision.


• Keep your own notes and copies of medical advice.


• Attend reviews and provide updated information.


• Speak to your Federation rep early if something doesn’t feel right.
