STAFF SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GETTING A MORTGAGE
WHAT OFFICERS AND
With more members turning to brokers for mortgage support, the Police Federation asked Quick Mortgages to answer some of the most common questions raised by officers and staff. We spoke to Kallie Crowcroft, an adviser with years of experience working with the policing community, and Henry Wright, who leads their engagement with the Police Federation, to get their insights

What are officers and staff most curious or concerned about when they reach out for advice? Most questions are around how lenders view police pay – especially overtime and allowances. We also get asked about whether there are any mortgage options designed specifically for police. While they’re not always clearly signposted, there are lenders with criteria that really work in your favour if you’re in the job. And with all the noise around interest rates and house prices, a lot of people just want someone to explain things in plain English and help them figure out what’s right for them.
How do you see the current mortgage and property market – is now a good time to look?
The market’s definitely more stable than it was this time last year, and we’re seeing more confidence returning. Fixed rates have levelled out, and there are signs that lenders are competing more again.

Property prices have held up better than expected too. But honestly, the best time to look is when you’re ready, everyone’s situation is different. The key is to get advice early so you can make decisions based on facts, not headlines”
What motivates you in this kind of work? Honestly? I love solving problems – and getting a message the day someone gets their keys or has just exchanged is such a buzz. I also love the people I work with here. One fun fact: one of our shareholders is Steve Smith, the founder of Poundland – he’s all about giving people value, and I love that ethos. It trickles down into how we do things here. Everyone pulls in the same direction to genuinely help clients, not just ‘sell’ to them.
My role is all about supporting the Police Federation – both nationally and at local branch level. I work closely with reps to offer tailored advice sessions, provide useful resources, or just be available when someone needs guidance. We’ve worked with the police community for years, and working with the Police Federation gives us a more focused way to support members. It’s not about pushing products – it’s about being approachable, reliable, and understanding the unique challenges officers and staff face.

Henry, tell us about your role working with the Police Federation and why the partnership matters.
Henry, what would you say to local Fed reps who want to get more support for their members? We’re always looking to build stronger links with local branches. If you’re a Fed rep and want to talk about how we can support your members – whether that’s advice sessions, sponsorship, or other resources – I’d love to hear from you. It’s all about working together to provide something genuinely useful.
