MADISON J A YES JUNIOR

A junior biology major, Madison Jayes was set for a pair of trips she knew would be highlights of her college career: a presentation at the annual meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists in Jacksonville, Florida, in late March and her John Belk International Program (JBIP) trip to Ecuador, where she planned to spend two weeks in May in the Amazon rainforest, a biologist’s paradise. Both were cancelled, and her plans to work at Discovery Place during the summer are uncertain.

Te JBIP cancellation hurt most. “It just clicked that

this is my love and my passion, and this is where I wanted to be,” she said. “So now I need to find another way to do it.” Madison was weighing her options and holding out hope that she’d be able to take a JBIP trip after her senior year. It was hard for her to conceal her disappointment, as the

past Kappa Delta president was ready to decide on a career path and thought the trip to Ecuador would help with her decision. “It’s a way to try and figure out where I want to go in life and what I want to do career-wise—not saying that I wouldn’t have those experiences in the future,” Madison said. “It’s just that I won’t have that now.” Te Greenwich, Connecticut native couldn’t even go

back “home.” Madison’s mother lives in New Jersey and has Parkinson’s disease, and her father still lives in Greenwich. Because of the high rate of COVID-19 cases in the New York City area, everyone decided Madison would be better off in Charlotte. In early April, she was staying in the Myers Park apartment she shares with her boyfriend and dog. “Not going home,” she said, “is also very scary.”
