Cornelia “C.C.” Cooper, a 29-year-old music

therapy major, was looking forward to playing Mrs. Cripps (Little Buttercup) in Queens’ spring production of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera H.M.S. Pinafore. She was disappointed when the April performance was cancelled, but grateful when it was rescheduled for the fall (October 17-18). Soon after, her story grew much more serious when she learned that her father, William, had been diagnosed with COVID-19. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he lives, with a 102-degree fever. Suddenly the show didn’t matter as much anymore. “I have to learn to come to peace with things that

are changing,” said C.C., whose tagline on her e-mail appropriately reads, “No matter what you are going through...Just know you will make it.” Her father did make it and has since been

discharged from the hospital. In the meantime, C.C. is living in a south Charlotte apartment, where she continued her coursework (including voice lessons). She admits that it was challenging because the in- person relationships that music therapy students form with their clients make up an important part of their learning. Nevertheless, she met with her professors online to hone lesson plans, select specific music for certain types of clients and complete other classwork that doesn’t require music therapy students to meet clients in person. “It’s unfortunate,” she said, “but at the same time, we still got something out of our education.”
