COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITIES. INNOVATIVE LEARNING.

In 2019, Mary Anne (M.A.) Rogers made a gift in honor of her husband, the late James E. Rogers. The Rogers Research Program was endowed to provide collaborative research experiences for faculty and students, and to allow opportunities for students to share the results of their work at regional and national conferences.

In its first year, this new endowment funded the Rogers Summer Institute for Research and Creative Work. The Institute provided students with immersive research experiences in collaboration with or under the supervision of Queens faculty members. During the summer of 2020, eight proposals representing eight faculty members and 12 students from varied majors were accepted and granted funds. Despite pandemic restrictions, seven of the eight groups were able to move forward virtually with their projects; one was postponed until summer 2021.

“Undergraduate research has a significant and positive impact on students’ critical thinking, reasoning and quantitative skills even as it strengthens their connection to faculty. Moreover, undergraduate research is demonstrated to have an even higher positive impact for students of color, first-generation students, and those who come from lower socio- economic backgrounds.”

– Dr. Sarah Fatherly, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

“Supporting faculty-student collaborative research coupled with providing opportunities for students to present their work at regional and national conferences seemed like the perfect way to honor Jim. Sharing what has been learned with others was always important to Jim—what you learn can enhance those with whom you work and those who come behind. We can’t individually know everything; collaboration is important to our collective growth.”

– M.A. Rogers
