BURNHAM TAXI DRIVER ESCAPES JAIL AFTER ASKING BOY 15 TO ‘SELL HIS BODY’

A former taxi driver who made a sickening proposition to a 15-year- old boy has avoided prison. Christopher Hilling, 64, originally from Burnham, admitted to engaging a child in sexual activity at Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday 8 August. The court heard how Hilling had offered the boy lifts in his taxi and personal car between September and November 2022.

During one journey, the depraved driver asked the teenager if he was “willing to sell his body”. Despite the boy cutting ties with Hilling, the cabbie continued to contact him, offering money in exchange for sexual activity. Hilling was arrested and initially denied attempting to groom the victim, but later pleaded guilty to inciting a boy aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.

He was handed a 16-month suspended jail sentence, a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and a five-year restraining order. He was also ordered to pay back £500 in costs. Det Con Megan Evans said: “Hilling’s attempts to groom this boy were persistent and manip- ulative. We will always act quickly to ensure harmful perpetrators are brought before the courts.”

EAST AYRSHIRE CABBIE ON SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER AFTER OFFERING TO WAIVE FARE FOR SEX

A Drongan cabbie has been con- victed of sexually assaulting a female passenger after offering to waive her fare in exchange for sex. James Mitchell, 58, admitted the offence at Ayr Sheriff Court last week. The court heard how he had pulled into a layby near Cumnock after the woman challenged him for taking a wrong turn. It was then that Mitchell made the explicit offer and began touching the woman. She managed to

escape and raise the alarm. The incident occurred in the early hours of September 17 last year after the woman and her cousin had been out in Drongan and hailed Mitchell’s taxi. Mitchell initially denied the charge and planned to lodge a special defence of consent. However, he

later admitted his guilt. Sheriff Desmond Leslie described the offence as a “significant breach of trust” and placed Mitchell on the sex offenders’ register for 5 years. He was also given a two-year supervision order, a six-month electronic tag, and a £500 fine. A non-harassment order was also imposed. Mitchell’s taxi licence was revoked following the incident, and he lost his job.
