MAN JAILED FOR SIX YEARS NINE MONTHS FOLLOWING VIOLENT ATTACK ON TAXI DRIVER

A man has been jailed after a violent assault on a taxi driver in Coventry. Artur Nowostawski has been jailed for six years and nine months after he attacked a taxi driver earlier this year. On 29 April, Nowostawski was picked up by a taxi from Coventry Railway Station, before driving towards Bennetts Road South. Just before the end of the journey, Nowostawski attacked the driver with a knife, hitting him in the neck and chest a number of times and demand- ing money.

Following the assault, we issued a wanted appeal for the 40-year-old and he was arrested a day later as a result of the appeal. He pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon at Warwick Crown Court, and on 6 August,

he was jailed. DC Jack Phillips from Coventry CID, said: “This was an unprovoked and sustained assault which left the victim with serious injuries. “They were lucky not to be more seriously hurt, and are now thankfully on the road to recovery. “This case took quick work from the officers to identify Nowostawski and arrest him in order to bring this case to court, and I’m glad he has been put behind bars for a significant period of time.”

BROTHERS JAILED FOR RACIST ATTACK ON TAXI DRIVER IN BLANTYRE

Two brothers have been jailed for a violent and racist attack on a taxi driver in Blantyre last September. Robert Scott, 29, and Chris- topher Scott, 27, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court where Robert admitted assaulting the cabbie and cting in a threatening or abusive manner, while Christopher was cleared of taking part in the assault but pleaded guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour towards police officers and spitting blood. The court heard an argument started after the taxi arrived to pick up the men shortly after midnight.

The brothers were asked to get out as they refused to pay upfront for their trip. The cabbie pressed an alarm to get help but Robert Scott grabbed his phone and threw it into the footwell. The situation escalated when Robert Scott dragged the driver from the car, pulled him to the ground and punched him, while hurling deeply offensive racist abuse. Dashcam footage from the taxi captured the incident, with Robert Scott also heard yelling at the the driver: “You’re going to die tonight”. Christopher Scott hurled abuse and threats at officers after his

arrest, spitting blood and warning them that he had Hepatitis C, though tests showed he didn’t have the virus. Lawyers for the brothers blamed heavy drinking in the case of Robert and mental health issues in the case of Christopher. Sheriff Linda Nicolson sen- tenced Robert Scott to

months in prison and Christopher Scott to 13 months. However, both men were released immediately as the sentences were backdated and both had been in custody since they

were September. SEPTEMBER 2024 PHTM arrested in
