DUNDEE TAXI DRIVERS OUT OF POCKET AS ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGERS FAIL


Taxi drivers in the city have suffered significant financial losses after payment technology at electric charging points through- out the city failed at the weekend. The problems were caused by issues with the ChargePlace Scotland network meant that drivers were only able to finally charge their electric taxis on Monday 12 August. One driver claims to have lost £400 in potential fares as three different charge points wouldn't accept his dedicated payment card. When he attempted to use his own bank card to buy electricity it took £20 from the card but failed to give any charge. So far, attempts at a refund have failed and he was unable to work all weekend.


Unite taxi rep Chris Elder said numerous drivers contacted him about the situation over the weekend complaining about problems with payment for charging as well as chargers not working at all. He estimated thousands of pounds were lost to city taxi drivers at the weekend because of this. The issue has highlighted the challenges faced by


the taxi


industry as it transitions to electric vehicles. Chris said he is seeking compensation for his members and has asked for a meeting with representatives of ChargePlace Scotland. Calls are now growing for urgent investment in the city’s charging network to support the taxi sector and encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles. Stephen Trayner, customer service director for Evolt Charging, said that an associated system that supplies a connection within our charge point communications was identified as the root cause and apologised for the inconvenience caused to members and users in the affected period.
