CRYING IN MY TEQUILA
Forget the fluctuating Euro, ignore the exhorbitant cost of a family holiday abroad these days, for while I was away and my mind taken with sunning myself by the pool, your correspon- dent missed out on backing one of his favourite golfers (Mar- tin Kaymer) who promptly won the US PGA at a staggering 80-1!! Readers will note I have been tipping the new Langer all year and on the back of his 5th place finish in the Open he only goes and wins the last major... unbacked! Meanwhile we have 42 runners and riders in the PHTM Footy Tipster competition which this year is sponsored by DNA In- surance. You will note their sporting brains have entered a team in the hope of usurping my crown and time will tell who is the most knowledgeable. (I have laid them 6/4 that they won’t beat me). The table in its entirety will always be available to view on our website but take a note now at the beginning of the handicaps of all the teams. On this theme we welcome our football correspondent from DNA, DoNAld to our ranks and below are his fancies for the year ahead. New readers can also look at my long term ante posts for domestic glory (opposite). On the European front we seem to be in unison in the Cham- pions League where he tips REAL MADRID (see my column op- posite) and on the Europa League front DoNAld’s tipped up the chances of CSKA MOSCOWat 40/1 (Coral).
HORSE RACING
There are two big horse races over the next five to six weeks, the St Leger and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Let’s deal with the latter first. With the retirement of Harbinger, I feel that the race has lost some of its lustre with O’Brien’s Fame and Glory an uneasy favourite and certainly not fancied by me. He will do well to match last year’s creditable effort (5th) and surely he is vulnerable to a more exposed type this year. One such horse and the one that took my eye in winning the Grand Prix de Paris in July is the Aga Khan’s BEHKABAD which is an outstanding 7/1 with Ladbrokes. French trained by the peerless Alain de Royer-Dupre, she will surely start a lot shorter at Longchamp come October. The trials (Foy, Niel and Vermeille) may bring something to light but presently this is my only ante post wager on Europe’s premier all age horse race. In the Leger I was less taken than most in Rewilding’s destruc- tion of the Voltigeur field and the one I took out of that race was JOSHUA TREE on his first start for over a year. He is widely available at 12/1 at time of writing. The other one to consider is ARCTIC COSMOS which is 8/1 with Paddy Power.
FOOTBALL – EUROPEAN
With the domestic front settled, now it is time to turn our at- tention to Europe and chiefly the Champions League and Eu- ropa League. The Champions League is rarely won by a team outside Europe’s elite and I have no hesitation in offering up Spain’s big two to dominate this season. I can see no alterna- tive to either REAL MADRID (top price 11/2) or BARCELONA (top price 7/2) in triumphing next May and my stake plan would be 100 units on Barcelona and 80 units Real Madrid (my maximum, for purposes of this column). The Europa League picture is more cloudy, however I feel that LIVERPOOL are massively overpriced at 12/1. Assuming they have overcome a tricky tie against Trabzonspor (this column goes to print before that result) Roy Hodgson’s success in this competition (last year’s sojourn for Fulham allied to the need to bring silverware back to Anfield) I think their squad is way above that which is needed to triumph in this competition. For my outsider we will go to the Dutch League and the 2009 Champions – AZ ALKMAAR who are a massive 100/1 with BlueSquare and the Tote. Always an intimidating place to go to I think they will provide a good run at a great price. As promised opposite my fancies for the domestic season are ARSENAL (6/1) IPSWICH and READING in the Championship (combined 7/1) and HUDDERSFIELD in Division 1 (currently 13/2).

Now that the big kick off is nearly upon us, and as alluded to before, my three against the field in Superbowl are HOUSTON TEXANS (40/1 Stan James), NEW YORK JETS (14/1 General) and on a left field note,SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (33/1 General).
