BIRMINGHAM DRIVER AND WIFE TRAGICALLY MURDERED IN PAKISTAN
Gul Wazir, a taxi driv- er from the Alum Rock district of Birm- ingham, and his wife Begum were shot dead in Pakistan on Friday 6 August. The couple’s son was in the same building at the time of the shooting, but escaped injury as he was in the shower. It is understood that a dispute had arisen over the arranged marriage of Mr and Mrs Wazir’s daugh- ter to Mr Wazir’s nephew. The couple had travelled to Pak- istan to visit their home village of Sale- hana, sometimes referred to as “Little Birmingham” because of its strong ties with the Pak- istani community in the West Midlands. took place and a compensation pay- ment was agreed upon between the families. However, the victims were having break- fast the following morning when three men - the man who was rejected as their daughter’s marriage partner, father,

other person - burst into the room, opened fire with a kalasnikov and shot them 40 times. Their family and close colleagues are obviously devastat- ed, and members of the Birmingham taxi trade who knew Mr Wazir were shocked by his killing.
The driver worked
for Manor Cars, whose owner Mr Mohammad Sid- dique said the company’s staff were all shocked at the news of the deaths.
He said: “Gul Wazir came to see me and said he was going to Pakistan the follow- ing day to sort out some family prob- lems. He was a very good worker and such a nice man. He was like my older brother.”
Mr Siddique added that he had worked with Gul Wazir for the last nine years and everybody respected him a lot. “It is very very hard for all of us, because he was so connect-
ed with my friends.” Mr Wazir’s neigh- bour May Sparrow said she had known him since he was a teenager,
adding
that he was a “prop- er Brummie”. She said: “Everyone knew him. He was an ordinary man looking after his fam- ily. He was so nice, and a wonderful father.
“He was full of life, delightful. There’s nothing bad you could say about him. His family all idolised him.”
