A hackney carriage driver was shocked to be shouted at and photographed when he picked up six pas- sengers from New- quay Airport. The driver, who did not wish to be named, was under the impression that he was legitimately pick- ing up cus- tomers after having dropped off a group to departures. However, the compa- ny contracted to transport tourists arriving at Newquay claims the driver should not have gained business on the airport’s private
ROW OVER AIRPORT PASSENGERS property.
The driver told the Newquay Voice: “As they were leaving arrivals to get to the cab, a man told them they couldn’t use my taxi and chased them up the car park. “As I was helping them get into the taxi, the man was taking masses of photo- graphs and saying we shouldn’t be doing it It was very embar- rassing and awkward, and I just wanted to get the hell out of there. “You just can’t treat the public like this. It was a very uncomfort- able ride down to
Newquay. I was flus- tered by it It wasn’t acceptable behav- iour.”
The company that holds the contract, said it had to “damp down” on taxi firms touting for business at the airport without permission.
Its director said: “The problem is that during the busy summer cer- tain taxi companies have been coming in and hanging around arrivals and waiting tor customers. Corn- wall Council has said that if anyone else is plying for trade we are well within our rights to report them.”
HEATHROW CABBIE RISKED FINE BY STOPPING FOR PREGNANT WOMAN
A Heathrow cab driver who picked up a heavily pregnant woman was threat- ened with a fine by a traffic warden for stopping in the valet parking area.
Muhammad Khan, from Langley, who has worked for Heathrow Minicabs for two years, said he was shocked by the warden’s lack of understanding during the incident on 15 June.

The private hire vehi- cle driver was asked by two passengers to be picked up outside T3 departures, next to the valet parking because one of them was six months preg- nant.
The 49-year-old told ‘Heathrow Skyport’: “It was terrible and
unacceptable the way we were treated. “On booking it was said the lady is preg- nant and therefore to be more careful. Therefore I parked in front of them to pick them up when a traffic warden in the area came and shouted ‘What are you doing’? “I politely pointed out the lady was vulnera- ble and could not walk far, but he shout- ed at me to go and started writing out a fine.”
Once the passengers were safely seated inside the car, Muhammad drove off before he could be issued with a ticket. He claimed that the one-minute stop-off would not have creat- ed any congestion.
Muhammad added: “If I receive the ticket I will take this to court.” Michael Shirbani, owner of the family cab firm, said: “Situa- tions like this are damaging to our busi- ness and tourism. It used to be free for 15 minutes to park so we could easily pick up passengers, that’s all we are asking for.” A BAA spokesman said Terminal 3 has a designated area for drop-offs for safety, security and conges- tion reasons, and to encourage free flow of traffic, there are no exceptions.
