THE BERNIE THE BOOK COLUMN RYDER CUP

Working towards giving our customers the extra edge

I HOPE YOU WERE ON!!

UP THE VILLA

No more crying in my tequila for me! After a couple of months of very near misses and not being able to get a bet down from Greece, regu- lar readers and followers of Bernie the Book will no doubt have feasted upon ARCTIC COSMOS winning the St Leger at a fantastic 12/1 odds. True, I advised taking the price of 8/1 but I can’t legislate for the varia- tions in on course punting. Not satisfied with just that I hope my legions of fans have taken my advice about the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

where last month’s column highlighted the chances of the French colt BEHKABAD. 7/1 was on offer then, it is now cur- rently 3/1 favourite at best. Furthermore my long term football fancies have enjoyed a great start to the season and currently Ipswich and Arsenal are lying in second place in their respective divisions and Hudder- sfield (advised pre-season at 9/1) are currently top and are best priced at Burlington Bertie – 100 to 30. Have I also mentioned that I was alone in tipping up the prospects of the Houston Texans at a staggering 66/1 for the Superbowl and people laughed at me! Now with a sparkling 2 and 0 start to the season which includes victory over the much vaulted Colts, they are a best priced 16/1. It’s a long way to Dallas in February but they should give us a run for our money. And so to this month!!

CARLING CUP

The lesser English cup competition has just begun in earnest and despite the big four tending to treat it with disdain, it is surprising to some that either Chelsea or Man Utd have won it five times in the last six years. But not this year. My main fancy is Houllier’s ASTON VILLA. Good squad, great at home, with the ability to humble any of the big four on their day, no European distraction and a cup competition that they are openly target- ing I think the current price of 18/1 is fantastic. So it’s the Villa for me. My second pick is NEWCASTLE UTD on the basis that they will be targetting this competition as a source of silver- ware and odds of 12/1 are fair.

Golf fans will know that the best weekend of the season hap- pens this weekend, October 2/3 and whilst there is no value in tipping either side to win I do think there is value to be had in the top points scorer on either side. For the Americans and de- spite the American captain, Corey Pavin, protestations I think there is no way on god’s earth that Mickelson will be paired with Woods, but might be with HUNTER MAHAN. On that basis and on the basis that Mahan is bang in form any way I suggest an interest on him at 11/1. Similarly on the European side I think the 7/1 about MARTIN KAYMER stands out. Quite as to who he will be partnered with I haven’t the faintest idea, pos- sibly Ross Fisher but I think he will be the mainstay of the Eu- ropean team.

AND FINALLY

This column is not just about Sports, it is also about entertain- ment and on that basis I could not let this opportunity go with- out tipping up my fancy for this year’s Strictly. And this year who better to lump on BRENDAN COLE and MICHELLE WILLIAMS. They are top price at 13/2 with Coral. And represent great value. OVER TO YOU DONALD.

Hi people – as this is my first ar- ticle I thought I’d take the chance to introduce myself. I’m DoNAld from DNA. Bernie the Book introduced me in his col- umn last month. (Shocking pre- dictions he made!) DNA Insurance Services Ltd are one of the UK’s leading Private and Public Hire specialist insurers and can be contacted via our website at www.DNA-Insur- ance.com As sure as Chelsea will win the Premiership this season DNA offer unrivalled advice and competitive rates for your Pub- lic and Private Hire insurance. I am a life long West Ham sup- porter and staunch England fan. On the 12th October I am look- ing forward to an England 2-0 victory over Montenegro with Rooney to score the first goal. With no Premiership action on the previous weekend and little England involvement for West Ham players – look at the team we could have had: David James, Rio Ferdinand, Anton Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Paul Konchesky, Michael Carrick, Nigel Reo Coker, Frank Lam- pard, John Terry, Jermain Defoe, Joe Cole They’ll be fresh out of the blocks to tame Wolves at Molyneux with a 2-1 win. I’d be interested to see if anybody’s team of former players could live with the ex-hammers. If you think you have one that could send it to me at donald@dna-insure.co.uk
