BETTER SERVICES FOR BRIGHTON’S DISABLED


More disabled-friendly taxis will soon be available in Brighton. The city council has agreed to a series of measures for taxis including five new hackney carriages


Parking bosses have banned a minibus for old and disabled peo- ple from a retail park. The service, run by Mount Taxis, used to transport its passen- gers to the door of shops at the Great Northern Retail Park. The minibus, run on behalf of West Yorkshire passenger transport authority Metro, would also wait at the bottom


with wheelchair access. It also agreed to issue five plates a year to wheelchair- accessible taxis Cllr Pete West told the Brighton Argus: “Dis- abled taxi users

Taxi drivers in Birming- ham are regarded as grumpy and surly by some passengers, a council survey has found.


Complaints about the standard of service from the city’s 1,400 black cabs included claims that some cab- bies go “the long way round” rather than choosing the quickest route to a destination. People taking part in the survey were also unhappy about lan- guage barriers, claiming that taxi driv- ers sometimes cannot speak English.


Others complained that drivers broke health and safety rules by smoking in their cabs. According to the Birm- ingham Mail, the survey, conducted by Research by Design agency for the city council, found no evi- dence of unmet demand for taxis, with most customers never


having to queue to pick up a cab from designated ranks even at busy times.


The findings will pro- vide further am- munition to taxi trade organisations, who have accused tho council of approving too many licences and flooding Birmingham with cabs and private hire vehicles. Taxi firms complain that drivers have to work far longer hours in order to maintain income levels.


The survey’s findings noted: “In terms of the drivers themselves, customer service is said to be mixed. Some drivers are described as being very friendly, chatting and helpful while oth- ers are criticised for their grumpiness. One person complained about drivers’ lack of comprehension of the English language, again reflecting poorly

The probe found that almost half of Birming- ham’s black cabs are older than ten years. Cabs older than 14 years have been banned by the council. Birmingham City Council welcomed the findings of the survey. A spokesman said: “We are not going to add to their woes by licensing any more black cabs in Birming- ham in the near future. “It is true that a few years ago, a common complaint was that drivers couldn’t speak English. We have addressed this by introducing a compre- hensive com- munication test. “While there will always be a few grumpy apples in the barrel, the majority of black cab drivers pro- vide a valuable service to the people of Birm- ingham.”
