FOUR YEARS FOR THUG WHO THREATENED DARTFORD CABBIES
A thug has been locked up for four years after threatening to cut the throats of two taxi drivers as he robbed them. Mark Emery,
from
Erith, blew the cash on drink and kebabs after carrying out attacks in Dartford and Slade Green, Maidstone Crown Court heard last month.
Having pleaded guilty to the offences in July, he received four years imprisonment for each, to run concurrently According to the Dart- ford and Swanley Times, the court heard that on April 30, Emery
called an Erith-based taxi company to pick him up to take him to a nightclub in Dartford. While driving Emery asked the 44-year-old driver to pull over and he pulled a kitchen knife from his pocket and held it to the dri- ver’s throat and then fled with £200.
Emery fled leaving the driver with a cut to his thumb, caused when he tried to get the knife away from his neck. He was arrested in May and having con- fessed to officers, he then showed them where he had thrown the purse and knife.
Police investigations led them to believe he had committed a simi- lar robbery on April 24 in Slade Green.
The court heard Emery held a broken bottle to the neck of a 34-year-old driver and demanded money as he threatened to kill him after the driver asked for a £3.50 fare. His victim sustained a cut from the bottle as he handed over £150. Although both victims have returned to work, one feels uneasy pick- ing up youngsters from nightclubs and the other has concerns working past midnight.

JAIL FOR PAIR WHO VIOLENTLY ATTACKED NORTHAMPTON CABBIE
A senior judge has warned that it is per- fectly obvious that it is in the public interest- that taxi drivers are guarded at night, as pressure grows to increase the protec- tion available to cabbies.
Detaining two defen- dants for a violent unprovoked attack on a taxi driver in Northampton, Judge Thomas Corrie said it was imperative that employees of private
hire firms were pro- tected.
The calls come in the wake of two assaults last month involving a gang of three girls who held terrified driv- ers at knifepoint, causing one of them serious slash wounds to his throat and hands as he struggled to break free.
The Northampton Chronicle reports that Judge Corrie spoke out in a case which saw two college stu-
dents unable to return for the start of the aca- demic year after taking part in a drunken attack upon a taxi driv- er.

from Kingsthorpe, pleaded guilty last month to assault and actual bodily harm; he was sentenced to ten months’ detention. William Miller, 18, also from Kingsthorpe, was sentenced to nine months at a young offenders’ institution.
