BOOK COLUMN
Bonjour mes amis! As predicted in last month’s column your resident Fran- cophile “Bernie la Livre” duly tipped up the chances of France in the Rugby World Cup and readers of this column hopefully collected the 4/1 on offer. Indeed France came within a point of winning the whole
shebang at 12/1 advised. With my winnings it’s off to La Gavroche to dine with the Mystery Tipper!
ALLEZ LES BLEUS Be
The Rugby World Cup is in full swing with the business end of the tournament still to come in about three weeks time. One result so far (Ireland beating Australia) is likely to have serious ramifications as now the number one two and three ranked teams according to the world ranking are all in the bottom half of the draw with a nightmare scenario of South Africa versus Australia in one quarter final with the winners facing the mighty All Blacks in the semis. What does this mean for us? Clearly the top half of the draw is wide open and I think FRANCE will win this mini Six Nations (they are seeded to meet England in the semis) h
HORSE RACING
With the flat season in its final throes its bring on the jumpers and as they begin their season it is less than six months to CHELTENHAM! Let’s hope we have as stellar a year this year as last. For my first tip we have to go back to the flat and shout up the chances of CAMELOT in next year’s Derby. The manner in which it destroyed a quality field in last month’s Racing Post Trophy makes him destined for stardom and even with eight months to go before Epsom he is well worth a large ante post voucher. To some the 9/2 top price on offer may seem skinny but if he arrives at Epsom he will surely be at “levels yer dev- ils” and the 9/2 will look huge. The jump season is now fully underway and now is the time to lay down an ante-post on the King George on Boxing Day. I ex- pect a huge season from Nicky Henderson and whilst he has the short price favourite for the King George in Long Run, he might also secure the first prize via RIVERSIDE THEATRE. Owned by celebrity actor Jimmy Nesbitt (hence its name) the 14/1 on offer with Stan James and Paddy Power has to be

AMERICAN FOOTBALL Extract from October’s Bernie the Book
We have reached the half way point of the regular season and our two pre-season tips are doing very well. The Saints (advised pre-season at 18/1) are currently third favourite at around the 9/1 mark but need to find a way of getting past Green Bay in the post-season as they are currently two games behind them and have already lost the split tie. What this actually means is that they will likely qualify as number two seeds in the NFC and will have to travel to an icy Milwaukee for the Champi- onship game in January. Not an ideal venue for a team that plays in a dome! However we do have Drew Brees! Our other ante-post is on the Baltimore Ravens who are hovering around 12/1 in the AFC. Approaching the midway point it seems to me that the AFC is significantly weaker than the NFC with the Pa- triots, the Steelers, the Texans and the Ravens a much of a muchness. However the reason I am mentioning this is I have a sneaky feeling that the OAKLAND RAIDERS (previously unher- alded and under the radar) will have a winning season. As they are currently 100/1 please keep any stakes to a minimum and this is indeed one of the occasions where I would advocate backing each way as the odds are half the odds first two. In a conference where the margins between victory and defeat are measured in field goals I think they are worth a sporting wager especially as they have just signed previous Heissmann winner, Carson Palmer as their new starting QB.
