CORDIC RECOGNISED AS TOP FUNDRAISER

On September 10th 2011, Cordic compet- ed in the Cambridge Dragon Boat Festival. A crew of 14 from the office entered to pad- dle the 250 metre course along the River Cam.

As well as being a fun- day, the event was also a major fund rais- er for a very worthy cause, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

Overall, Cordic were placed 11th of 42 teams and managed to get through to the semi-finals; unfortu- nately they came up against the eventual winners AND run- ners-up in their semi and so didn’t progress to the final. This year we raised over £4,500 for EACH and were recognised as the top fundraiser!

WOLVERHAMPTON TAXI CASH DRIVE AIDS CHARITY

Taxi drivers in Wolver- hampton swapped their cabs for seats at the poker table and a stroll around the golf course for two charity fundraisers.

Central City Cars owner Gerry Turner organised the events in aid of the Baby Blues Appeal, which raises cash for neona- tal units in the Black Country.

EACH supports fami- lies throughout their experience of caring for children with life- threatening conditions and complex health- care needs. EACH relies on public sup- port for around 75 per cent of their required income of approxi- mately £5.5 million per

year - voluntary income through spon- sored events is absolutely vital. You can read more at www.each.org.uk

According to the Wolverhampton Chro- nicle, around 25 peo- ple, including drivers, their families and friends, entered the poker night while ten teams of four teed off at the golf day at the Wergs club in Keepers Lane, Tettenhall. They raised £1,100 and the firm, which has a fleet of 70 taxis, hand- ed over a cheque for the amount to delight-

ed charity bosses. The Baby Blues Appeal charity has

raised more than £115,000 since it was established in 1992.

OVER A HUNDRED CABS TAKE PART IN THE 18th ANNUAL MAGICAL TAXI TOUR TO DISNEY

This year was the 18th annual event taking children with life threatening illnesses to the Disneyland Paris theme park. The Chairman and Com- mittee of The Magical Taxi Tour put in an order for sunshine all the way and that is exactly what they got. Although the 100 taxis collecting their fami- lies at an early hour on 23rd September started their journeys in the hours of dark- ness, as the day dawned the weather grew warm and sunny.

The Big Breakfast send off took place at East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf where the families, drivers, sponsors and digni- taries sat down to eat before the Lord Mayor, Alderman Michael

stretching out for miles, cabs glinting in the sunshine, heading towards the ferry in Dover and then on to Calais. On arrival in France the convoy lined up ready for the final stage of the jour- ney. After a refuelling and refreshment stop and some face paiting everyone finally ar- rived at the hotel in Disneyland.

Bear cut the ribbon for the convoy to set off. Some of the drivers taking part in this trip have made every sin- gle trip since the event began, and some were making their first trip this year. Police outriders from both the City of Lon- don and some Gen- darmes who had come

over from France to help with the escort duties led the way off from Canary Wharf. They were accompa- nied by London Ambulance crews, the AA and the tuck wagon carrying supplies of drinks and food. Once on the motor- way, the extent of the convoy could be seen

In the morning they all headed to the park for a day of excitement on the rides. The good weather had brought out a lot of visitors and the park was full of excited children, not just the ones from this trip. In the evening a Gala Dinner was held and once the food had been eaten, the Dis- ney characters came out to join the chil- dren. Sunday also

dawned bright and sunny and the trip back to Calais was a lovely journey through the French country- side. The taxis and the support vehicles boarded the ferry home. The number of people involved in making this trip so successful is far too

many to list; the spon- sors are greatly appreciated and the Committee would like to thank them all for their generosity. Not least thanks go to all the cab drivers who give their time freely to bring miles of smiles to the children each year.
