IN THE NEWS TAXIS JOIN AMBASSADOR SCHEME TO GIVE VISITORS A WARM WELCOME TO THE VALLEYS
Visitors to The Valleys who take a taxi in Merthyr Tydfil will now be given a guide to the sights and unique his- tory of the area as part of their journey.
Nine taxi drivers have been trained along with 100 local volunteers across The Valleys as Community Tourism Ambassadors. The unique tourism initia- tive, has been funded by The Valleys Region- al Park Programme, utilising grant aid from the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government. Forming an important part of the Heart and Soul campaign, it aims to involve local people in improving the visitor experience by sharing
local knowledge of the area. The Funky Kabs taxi drivers have complet- ed the “Our Place” course module as well as the Level 2 World Host Award in the Principles of Cus- tomer Service in Hospitality, Leisure, Travel & Tourism. At least 200 people across the region will be trained when the scheme is complete in 2012. The Ambassa- dors will offer a welcoming presence to visitors, sharing their local knowledge and experiences as well as highlighting special places of inter- est and quirky facts about the area.

Merthyr Funky Kabs drivers were encour- aged to look at their area through the eyes of tourists, anticipating the sights they might want to see on their visit. Andrew Barry, Proprietor for Funky Kabs in Merthyr, took part in the scheme
along with call centre staff and drivers. He said: “Cabbies are usually the first people visitors come into con- tact with and therefore it’s really important we make a good first impression and make sure they feel welcome. We’re all from Merthyr
and are really proud to be Ambassadors and share what makes it a great place to visit. “We often get asked for recommendations of places to eat, drink and sleep and now we know exactly where to take them. I know the drivers especially love reeling off the quirky facts we learnt to their passengers! We’ve already had positive feedback from cus- tomers and hope we’re helping to ensure visi- tors come back to Merthyr and tell their friends about it.” Rhys Hughes, Com- munity Tourism Devel- opment Officer for the Valleys Regional Park project, said: “The vision for this scheme
is to continue to pro- mote The Valleys as an attractive area for visi- tors. Local people play a vital role in making the visitor experience a positive one. The Community Tourism Ambassador scheme encourages volunteers from across The Val- leys to receive free, accredited training and to become a wel- coming host and a source of information for their local area. “Our Ambassadors are fully trained in meeting and greeting visitors to give them that unique Valleys welcome and we help them expand their knowledge of their area to help visi- tors get the most out of their stay.”
