PERVERT CABBIE WAS A CONVICTED KILLER A Chorley taxi driver found guilty of sexual- ly assaulting a teen- age boy has been revealed as a convict- ed killer.
The Chorley Guardian reports that Zulfikar Nawaz, 56, was con- victed of sexual assault on a male after a ten- day trial at Preston Crown Court. He sub- jected his 18-year-old victim to a terrifying ordeal after he drove him home from a party in Chorley town centre. After the case, it was revealed in court that Nawaz had a previous conviction for man- slaughter dating back to 1977, although the precise details of that offence were not dis- closed.
Because that convic- tion was regarded as ‘spent’, it meant he was able to get a hack- ney carriage licence from Chorley Council. In December 2010, he picked up his victim and a friend from a taxi rank. At just after mid- night, Nawaz, who is married with four chil- dren, drove the pair to an address near Chor- ley, where he dropped the victim’s friend off. He then carried on alone with the victim. As he approached the house, his passenger told him where to stop. Recalling what hap- pened next, the teenager gave the court a detailed account of his ordeal. During the course of
the trial, at Preston Crown Court, Nawaz, of Balshaw Road, Ley- land, had accused his victim of running off after failing to pay the fare, and later return- ing to the scene to plant evidence.
Nawaz has been a taxi driver since 1996, regis- tered with Chorley Borough Council as a hackney carriage driver. He was bailed until November 7 for a pre- sentence report to be prepared. He must not leave his house between the hours of 9.30pm and 6am, and must not carry out work as a taxi driver. Speaking after the ver- dict, the victim’s father said: “I am just pleased the truth has
come out.”
He praised his son’s ‘bravery’ in coming forward to report it to the police, and going through the ordeal of giving evidence, and added: “It has been a very difficult time, but now the family can start to move on.” Cllr Eric Bell, who is responsible for licens- ing at Chorley Council, said: “All our taxi driv- ers go through rigorous checks to determine if they are a fit and proper person before they can get a licence.
“As soon as the coun- cil became aware this allegation had been made, Mr Nawaz’s licence was suspend- ed, and following the conviction we will now
