Well, doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun. It occurred to us during this press deadline that the National Private Hire Association has been going for twenty years. And also that the name is somewhat inaccurate these days, given that there are as many hackney carriage associations affiliated to us as there are pri- vate hire groups. But the main thing that hit us was that, over that period of time, an awful lot has gone on... and the Association has taken an active part in so many of the positive devel- opments during this last two decades. We fully intend to carry on with this fervent activity - if you’ll help us! As PHTM readers will be aware, the Law Commission is undertaking a complete review of taxi and private hire leg- islation: they are currently fact-finding in all directions, speaking to all the industry stake- holders, holding advisory panels, and generally absorbing all they can from the trade and from licensing departments to get a com- prehensive overview of how things function - or not, as the case may be - at present. There will be a public consultation starting next April for 13 weeks, actually spanning from May through July, during which time they will can- vas public opinion from every sector, most certainly including taxi/PHV users as well. This is your golden opportunity to make your views known... and this Association is where you can guarantee that those views will be col- lated and passed on to the proper source. We have been told on more than one occasion that the Association is the originator of the most
comprehensive anthology of informa- tion relevant to this industry; NPHA mem- bers will know that we pass this information on to all members who ask for it, and will gain benefit. They also know that we do not impose policy on members; rather, we pass on those mem- bers’ views to who- ever will listen. In this

There are those out there who’ve taken their sceptic pills and are moaning, “Yeah, yeah, we’ve heard it all before... nothing will be done this time either.” Actually we believe that indeed, something will be done this time - and it is our avowed intention to pass on any and every possible opinion, moan, good stuff, bad stuff, every word we get, to try to assist in the reformation of our industry.
But we need your participation, and we need your support. You all know that the Associa- tion’s doors stay open purely through memberships and renewals, and that there are loads of you out there who have benefited from our efforts in the past. So if you’ve not joined yet, get on with it! Oh and by the way, you can now ‘spread the load’ of your mem- bership fee by way of Standing Order.

We’ll go back to our usual light-hearted banter this column is noted for in next month’s sea- sonal issue... but we thought it important to do a bit of trumpet-blowing this time.
