ROAD RUNNERS OF REDHILL SAVE THE DAY FOR WINNING YOUNGSTERS

FALMOUTH TAXI DRIVER IS A ‘KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR’

A Falmouth woman has called a taxi driver her “knight in shining armour” after he returned her missing puppy.

Vicki Daly had discov- ered that one of the litter of nine lurcher puppies was missing after she arrived home from taking their moth- er to see a vet.

Woodfield pupils prepare to board their transport to Thorpe Park

Adventurous pupils swapped hardbacks for hell-raising roller- coaster rides thanks to a successful Surrey Mirror appeal.

More than 100 special needs students jumped into a fleet of Road Runners taxis on a recent Tuesday for a day out at Thorpe

Park.

The staff and students at Merstham’s Wood- field School, Sunstone Grove, won the day out through charity Merlin Wizards.

But they came within a few days of missing out on a day of thrills and spills after the coach company taking

them doubled their price at the last minute, blaming their own error on a “new girl”.

However, luckily the Mirror stepped in and joined forces with the Redhill-based taxi company, who provid- ed a fleet of cars at the 11th hour.

But taxi driver Alan Matthews tracked down the ten-day old puppy and returned it at 2am not even ask- ing for the fare. Vicki told the Falmouth Packet: “He phoned me and asked if mummy’s ready because baby’s com- ing home. I offered him a fare for his troubles and he said no, he was just happy to help out. He did not care about the time and did not

care about the money. He’s a knight in shin- ing armour.”

The puppy’s mum Daisy had been suffer- ing with stomach pain so Vicki piled into a taxi to the vets with the dog, the puppies and her ten-year-old son Aaron.

After counting all the puppies up out of the taxi, they were at the vet surgery for three hours when tests revealed that Daisy would be fine. They then piled into another taxi home driven by the firm A to B, but realised that there were only eight puppies.

Vicki said: “This caused a major panic so I phoned the vet and frantically looked around for the puppy. We also tried to phone A to B but they were

shut at that time in the morning.”

Instead Vicki phoned a different taxi firm, Aba- cus taxis, in the hope they would have another way of getting hold of A to B.

“The driver said, ‘leave it with me,’ so I waited. I knew a taxi driver I used to live near who was on duty so he put a shout out over the radio. He found that the last customer from A to B had told the owner if he knew there was a dog in his taxi. “As he was checking his taxi, Alan from Abacus pulled up and took the puppy. He put it down his shirt to keep it warm and took it home.”

Vicki said that as the puppy was a female, she would have to name her Alana.
