17-YEAR OLD SLOUGH GIRL FINED FOR FALSE KIDNAP CLAIM

A 17-year-old girl has been fined £80 for wasting police time and resources after she claimed she was being kidnapped by a taxi driver.

The teenager had got a taxi from her boyfriend’s house in Slough, intending to go to Datchet, but texted her boyfriend to say she had been kid- napped by a taxi driver who was now driving her to Oxford or Bices- ter.

Oh Thursday Septem- ber 30, at about 4.50am the worried teenager’s boyfriend contacted police after receiving the texts and the incident was instantly graded ‘urgent.’ A number of procedures were set in place, involving a

senior investigating officer from Thames Valley major crimes unit and more than 15 officers from Thames Valley Police. Officers from Warwick- shire also supported Thames Valley in their search which involved carrying out motorway observations in a bid to find the offending vehicle.

The Bicester Review reports that around the same time a local investigation discov- ered the girl was in fact in the Datchet area. Further enquiries led police to the girl at 7.40am when she claimed she had gone out with her friend and had lost her phone. She later admitted she had lied to her boyfriend. Detective

Sergeant John Slater, who dealt with the investigation, said that she had been made aware of the gravity and the repercussions of her actions.

Mmmm...How many more reports will there be about taxi/PHV passengers “crying wolf” and wasting police time, and/or ruining drivers’ lives with their false accusations. How many more councils will bring in condi- tions of licence stating that drivers “must not engage in sexual activity (or innuendo) with pas- sengers” – leaving the door wide open for more false accus- tions. Long live in-car CCTV with sound! - Ed.

CARS CRUSHED AS WALL COLLAPSES IN MANCHESTER

Parked cars were crushed by rubble as part of a gable end collapsed.

Dozens of workers and home owners on Maine Road in Moss Side, Manchester, poured into the street after hearing a load bang. A taxi along with a car owned by Simon Dod- well, 24, were badly damaged by the falling masonry.

Simon, a graphic designer who works at nearby PHTM advertis- er, Future Outdoor Media, told the Man- chester Evening News: “I was at my desk when I heard a mas- sive bang - it sounded like a bomb had gone

off.

“There were bricks everywhere and it was a right mess. I had a bit of a chuckle when I saw the state of the two cars, but then I realised one of those was mine.”

Simon, whose compa- ny puts advertising on taxis, had only just fin- ished working on the cab that took the brunt

of the collapse.

He said: “My car was- n’t too bad. But we had only just finished working on the taxi and it was waiting there to be picked up.” Simon’s boss, Steve Darlington, 53, said: “If it had happened half an hour earlier there would have been kids walking home from school right past it.”

BASILDON CABBIES IN BUS LANE PLEA TAXI RANK TAXI RANK NEW shape Fiat Doblo

Basildon’s taxi drivers are campaigning for the right to drive in bus lanes. The cabbies claim their journeys will be shorter if they are allowed to use the

lanes, which would benefit customers by lowering fares.

The Southend Evening Echo reports that they met Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon

and East Thurrock, and John Baron, MP for Basildon and Biller- icay, to discuss how to convince Essex Coun- ty Council to change its rules.

More than 30 black cabs were broken into during a two-day crime spree in Coventry. Cabbies say they have had their windows smashed while their taxis were parked out- side their homes. It’s believed thieves were after money. Alias Yousef, former chairman of Coventry Taxi Drivers’ Associa- tion and the city’s representative on the West Midlands Taxi Forum, said things got so bad last month black cab makers ran out of replacement windows.

He told the Coventry Telegraph: “A witness said it was a guy on a motorbike going round people’s houses, put-

ting cab windows through and looking for valuables. The local dealers actually ran out because they did- n’t know that many would go in one week. “These are not oppor- tunist incidents here, it’s premeditated - they’re actually going out to target taxis in the city. Drivers are even leaving their door unlocked now to say ‘come in, have a look around, there’s noth- ing in here - just don’t smash the window’.” Police say not all 30 incidents were report- ed to them.

Harjeet Singh Bains had his window smashed. He said: “I only found out at about 6am when I came out

to it. I had taken every- thing out. “You lose a day’s wages plus the cost of repairs and it costs about £200.”

Driver Gurdial Bains said: “What’s actually been happening is cabbies have been leaving their float in the cab. As soon as these people find £50 or £60 in a cab they will try the rest of the city. It’s easy pickings for them. The cabs should be empty of any valuables.” A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: “Coventry Police police take all reports of car crime seriously and are investigating these reports.”
