STREET CARS REVEALED AS NEWMANCHESTER AIRPORT OFFICIAL PRIVATE HIRE TAXI PARTNER

Manchester-based Street Cars has been named as the new official private hire partner at Manch- ester Airport. Street Cars, which was established in 2002 and has its headquarters

on

Chorlton Street in the city, will com- mand three offices at each airport ter- minal with a fourth at the airport’s train station from 1st April onwards. I Love Manchester reports that the deal is a huge coup for Street Cars, and will see its fleet expand to 800 drivers across the region and a total of 120 staff. A spokesman for Street Cars said: “After months of planning and con- versation,

Street

Cars Manchester is now truly proud to announce the new partnership with Manchester’s Inter- national Airport. “This collaboration will see us command three offices at each

and see us in action once we’re settled in, and be sure to sit and ride with Man- chester’s

leading private hire firm.

Because when we lead, others follow.” A Manchester Air- port

spokesman

said: “We can con- firm that after a

competitive tender process, Street Cars has been appointed as Manchester Air- port’s dedicated pri- vate hire company.”

PASSENGERS COULD FACE HIGHER FARES AT NEWCASTLE AIRPORT

of the terminals with a fourth at the Air- port train station. There will be a newly invested dedi- cated fleet organis- ed at each office; brand new hybrids, people carriers and executive Mercedes at the ready to pro- vide you with a smooth, comfort- able

and safe

journey home; all accompanied with the day’s paper and free WiFi included with the ride. “This will all com- mence come April 1st, and all the staff over at Street Cars Manchester could not be more excited to service the mass-

es of people from all over the world that go through the UK’s third busiest airport. “We will still be offering the highest level of

service

which we are known for and we will still be operating as usual within the city of Manchester. “The whole team at Street Cars Manch- ester acknowledges the immense sup- port that we have received from the people of Manch- ester from day one, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks and grati- tude to you all for doing so. “Be sure to come

Taxi drivers have claimed that passen- gers could now face higher fares, after losing a long-stand- ing contract

to

deliver the taxi rank at Newcastle Interna- tional Airport. Members of the Air- port Taxi Asso- ciation urged New- castle City Council to intervene, amid a row over private hire firm Arrow Cars being chosen to take over the airport’s service from May. The move means that passengers will no longer be able to hail a cab outside the airport, but will instead have to book a journey online, over the phone, or at a booking office inside the terminal building. Taxi driver Amir Ahmed told a council meeting last month: “The Newcastle Air- port decision will mean that 129 taxi drivers from various councils will

lose

their livelihoods. “It will deprive pas- sengers of choice in meeting their trans- port needs, as well as causing inconve- nience

for travelling the public,

especially for those with disabilities, and will probably in- crease passengers’ fares.” He also claimed that the decision was “in breach of the air- port’s own regu- lations”, and said that

the current

drivers were “still working and provid- ing a full service to the public at the air- port in the hope that this matter will be resolved”. Fellow driver Zul- faqaar Youssaf ad- ded:

“Newcastle

International Airport has had a taxi rank for 52 years. We are not taxi drivers, we are ambassadors for Newcastle, we are the first point of call.” Cllr Nick Kemp, the council’s

cabinet

member for environ- ment,

responded

that the local author- ity has no power to intervene in the deci- sion - despite being a shareholder in the airport - but would raise drivers’ con- cerns with airport bosses. An airport spokes- man told Chronicle- Live: “The tender process for the pro- vision of taxi ser-

vices at the airport took into account a wide range of criteria and a compre- hensive review of all applicants was car- ried out. Following this Arrow Cars was awarded the con- tract. “Arrow Cars scored highly in the process due to their product offering, use of the latest

technology

and investment in a new fleet of vehicles - including those with disabled access. Their WAVs will be available for any driver to use when required. “We are unable to comment on specific journeys, however overall Arrow Cars’ pricing is expected to be in line with that of Airport Taxis and other taxi operators in the area. “Airport Taxis has signed an addendum to terminate their contract on April 30 and we are working closely with them to ensure a smooth transition to the new provider. Arrow Cars has recruited a large number of drivers from the region including a number from the ATA.”
