12 MONTH SUPERVISION ORDER FOR PRESTON TEEN’S ATTACK ON CABBIE
A schoolboy who took part in a “frenzied and crazed” assault on a cab driver has escaped a jail term. The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to assaulting taxi driver Dylan Hamer and damaging his black cab in a dis- pute over a fare. Preston Youth Court heard how the young- ster and co-defendant, Samuel Marsden, 18, lashed out at the driver, rained blows on his cab, and almost tore his doors off as one of the three women they were with shouted: “Get him out and kill him.” The two teenagers and three young women had called a cab to pick them up from a 40th birthday party at the Lonsdale Club in Ful- wood Hall Lane in the early hours of October 31.
At the end of Deepdale Road the pair, who had been drinking, asked Mr Hamer to pull over because they did not have enough money to go any further, magis- trates heard.
Marsden paid Mr Hamer the £5 he owed him but started punch- ing him through the window.
According to the Lan- cashire Evening Post, Jackie Garrat, prose- cuting, told the court: “He had gone to get out but realised he was in danger and pushed himself back into the cab and locked it under a barrage of fists and kicks. He then stalled the vehicle as he was panicking try- ing to get away.
“They continued to kick and tried to put the glass through. He was terrified at that point as the attack had become extremely frenzied and
crazed.”
Defending, Sarah Wilkinson told the court the youth, who was diagnosed with attention deficit hyper- activity disorder aged seven, had been drinking heavily and could not recall the incident.
The teenager admitted assault and criminal damage and was sen- tenced to a 12 month supervision order and ordered to pay £100 compensation.
Marsden, of Millbank Court, Preston, was previously ordered to complete 250 hours’ unpaid work and pay £250 costs and £100 compensation.
The court heard that no evidence was offered against the female pas- sengers who had been charged with criminal damage to the taxi and their
cases were dropped. RICHARD HARDIE THE NEW NAME FOR

TEN YEARS FOR MAN WHO BIT OFF PART OF WATFORD CABBIE’S EAR
A man who bit off part of the ear of a taxi driv- er during a bungled robbery was jailed for ten years.
Michael Cook, 35, held a knife to the driver’s neck and demanded his takings. But he hadn’t reckoned on Watford cabbie Ian Stuart resisting and in the struggle that followed he plunged his teeth into the driver’s ear, completely severing it. At St Albans Crown Court on January 29 Cook, from Ilford, appeared for sentence having been found guilty by a jury in December of attempt- ing to rob the driver, inflicting grievous bodi- ly harm with intent and possessing an offen- sive weapon.
The Hemel Hempstead Gazette reports that the judge said Cook was a danger to the public and sentenced
him to an extended licence period that will come into operation when he is eventually released from prison. At the trial the driver told how he had picked up Cook and another man, 33-year-old Mark Bousfield in Watford, on March 25 last year at around 11.30pm. Mr Stuart said Cook was on the back seat and Bousfield in the front passenger seat. When he came to a stop the man on the front seat got out leav- ing Cook still on the rear seat.
Mr Stuart went on: “Next thing I knew I thought I’d been put in a head- lock. The guy behind me had grabbed me. He said ‘Give me the money or I’ll slit your f’****g throat’. I knew what I felt against my neck must be a knife. “I grabbed the blade. It was dark and I guess it

was adrenalin, I was very scared. I pulled the blade forward and he came forward with it.
“It was then I felt a pain in my ear. He had bitten off part of my ear and had bitten my head.” After a long struggle the blade broke off. “I was trying to get out but I had my seatbelt on. Next thing there was a boot flying into my face.”
Detective Sergeant Laurie Rush from Herts Police said: “We have a very positive result, which sends a strong message that this kind of barbaric behaviour is not tolerated on the streets of Hertford- shire.”
He added: “I would like to commend the taxi driver for his courage and bravery throughout this ordeal from incident through to trial.”
