EDINBURGH FIRM WINS AWARD
Edina Cars, of Albion Road is the only carbon neutral taxi service in Edinburgh.
The company is one of four businesses to be honoured for their lev- els of customer service by winning a Swift Award.
These awards recog- nise “unsung” businesses that deliver the quickest, most reli- able and best value service.
Tina Shortle, marketing director of online insur- ance company
swiftcover.com, which
sponsors the awards, told the Edinburgh Evening News: “Organ- isations like a taxi companies rarely win awards, despite being vital businesses within the community.” Congratulations from all at PHTM
SCUNTHORPE’S ‘PETS MY RIDE’
Poorly pets in the Scun- thorpe area will be given a ride to recovery after Ashby Veterinary Surgery set up its own pet taxi service.
The novelty ‘pet my ride’, supplied by Ani- medic, is a purpose-run vehicle driven by a fully- trained vet who will visit people’s houses. Veterinary surgeon-
Lawrence Brown told the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph: “The idea is that we provide a pet courier/taxi service for clients who are not able to get their animal to the vets because either they don’t have transport themselves or it could be difficult to find a taxi that will carry dogs in the back.
“If someone is house- bound, we have a qualified veterinary nurse who will go along and pick up the pet from their house, take the his- tory and any relevant details. “We will also make house visits for people who do not want to bring their pet in them- selves.”

A green private car hire firm has opened in Tor- bay. 1st Cabs Torbay is presently operating from The Willows, Torquay, but has plans to move to premises in Paignton when plan- ning permission has been sorted out. The business is being run by Sarah and Nathan Sloman, who ran a similar operation in Brixham for six years
before selling up to move to Thailand. Sarah told the Torquay Herald Express: “That didn’t work out so we moved back to the UK and have gone back into the businesses we know.”
She said they have seven drivers at the moment including themselves. We decided on a change of location as Paignton and Torquay
is a bigger kettle of fish compared to Brix- ham. We are looking to expand and get a bigger piece of the Bay cake. “We are a green busi- ness. We have liquid petroleum gas vehicles which are cleaner and cheaper than petrol or diesel. That means we have cheaper fares, both in start up and mileage.”
TUNING CANNOCK TAXIS TO TACKLE DOWNTURN
A Heath Hayes taxi firm has found an innovative approach to beating off the economic gloom by piloting new fuel-saving technology.
Three cars from Five Star Taxis have been ‘remapped’ to reduce fuel consumption by 10-20 per cent, which saved the firm £3,600 last year. “We’ve seen savings of at least a fifth in our fuel costs in the cars that
have been remapped, that’s made a massive difference,” director Paul Barnes told the Cannock Mercury. Mike Walton, of Heath Hayes based Rapid Remap, carried out the work on the cars, which involved digital- ly retuning the engines’ factory set- tings with specialist equipment and soft- ware.
He said: “For firms this
could be the difference between staying in business and going bust.”
Director of policy at the Southern Staffordshire Chamber of Com- merce, Simon Tulitt added: “With savings of up to 20 per cent possi- ble on fuel costs this could be the crucial factor for some firms to remain in business in these difficult trading conditions.
