MARCH 2009
AWARDING ACHIEVEMENT CONGRATULATIONS TO MANY OF NOTTINGHAM’S PRIVATE HIRE DRIVERS
Over 100 private hire drivers were bowled over at the Awards Cer- emony held at the Trent Bridge Cricket Ground in Nottingham on Janu- ary 28th.
The ceremony was to mark the fact that Not- tingham’s private hire drivers are unleashing a charm offensive on the city’s visitors following the first wave of gradua- tions from a course which has given them valuable customer serv- ice and tourism skills. The new ambassadors for the city, largely from DG Cars and Trent Cars, attended the ceremony where they each received their BTEC/NVQ level 2 certifi- cates. In addition to training them to offer tourist information to passengers, the three- month course has provided them with a sound awareness of dis- ability and discrimination
issues, personal and passenger safety and customer service skills. The ceremony began with an address by Not- tingham City Cllr Hassan Ahmed who, in welcoming everyone, said how pleased he was to have been invited to witness this special event, and to recognise the great strides and progress being made by Nottingham’s private hire drivers.
Mark Cartledge, chair of the Association of Nottinghamshire Pri- vate Hire Operators, said, “This sort of achievement, and the development and deliv- ery of more professional standards by the private hire trade, is one of the rea- sons that I accepted the invitation to become Chair of the Association in 2003.” Tony Baccoli of Trent Cars, and Ian Pole of

Catherine Higham, quality and skills man- ager at Experience Nottinghamshire, said: “A taxi driver is usually one of the first people visitors meet and it’s important that they not only offer excellent service, but also talk up the city and generally give the visitor a warm welcome. First impres- sions really do count.” The qualification was offered free to eligible drivers in the city through the national Train to Gain project. Nottinghamshire for all of her hard work. “Like the inevitable snowball rolling down the hill gathering momentum, the demand by drivers to undertake this pro- gramme has just recently increased immensely, and every- one is now looking for a piece of the action, including training providers. It just goes to show you what is achievable working together, and what it takes to achieve!” He added: “Let us be under no illusion, this is not just about obtaining this qualification; it is about sustaining the delivery and benefit of a quality and profes- sional service to customers by utilising these newly acquired qualifications and stan- dards, on and into the future!
