62 PRIVATE HIRE AND TAXI MONTHLY

MARCH 2009 AWARDING ACHIEVEMENT

MORE KNOWLEDGE FOR HORSHAM’S TAXI AND PRIVATE HIRE DRIVERS A large number of taxi

and private hire drivers in the Horsham District are gaining further qualifications to further ensure the public’s safety. Twenty one local taxi and private hire drivers have recently complet- ed the first NVQ Level 2 in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving and the BTEC qualification ‘Transporting Passen- gers by Taxi and Private Hire’ to improve their customer skills and improve public safety standards.

Owing to the flexible approach of the train- ing provider, the drivers were able to complete the award with mini- mum disruption to their working day and because of this method a further thirty two driv- ers have completed the BTEC qualification and are working towards their NVQ Level 2 quali- fication.

GoSkills (the Sector Skills Council for Pas- senger Transport) has, with the support of the industry, developed national occupational standards for skills development. The quali- fications were delivered by PDM Training and

Consultancy Ltd. A presentation was held at Horsham Dis- trict Council on Tuesday 17 February 2009 where the Chair- man of the Council, Cllr John Bailey, presented the many drivers with their pass certificates

and gold pin badges. Amongst those present was Ranjana Nayee from Crawley, who is licensed in the Hor- sham District and works for AAA2B pri- vate hire. She proudly said afterwards: “I am delighted to be the first

Indian woman who is a taxi driver in West Sus- sex to receive both of these qualifications.” Speaking of everyone’s achievements, Cllr Brian Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Health at Horsham Dis- trict Council, said: “The Council warmly con- gratulates those who have volunteered to pursue the course as it covers a whole range of passenger transport, customer care, disabili- ty awareness, health and safety, driving effectively and safely and updates in the law.” Nigel Haverson, Head of Public Health and Licensing at Horsham District Council, added: “This qualification is cur- rently not yet a requirement for licensed drivers, however we have supported this training with PDM Train- ing and Consultancy of Andover which has cov- ered many aspects of the

way the licensed drivers undertake their jobs. “I would remind you that as well as this qual- ification all taxi and private hire drivers and vehicles undergo vari- ous vigorous checks to ensure the safety of the public at all times.” Barry Levene, Regional Manager, South East, for GoSkills, said: “Many congratulations to all the drivers that have com- pleted the course. “In the past, the hack- ney carriage and private hire industry has not received the recognition it deserves. “Now the industry has its own bespoke quali- fication and, across the south east, the industry is improving its image and profes- sionalism.

“This success story shows what can be achieved when all the partners work together for the benefit of the pas- senger transport sector.”
