FOOTBALL COACH CRIES AS HE GETS THREE YEARS’ JAIL FOR VILE RANT AGAINST STOKE-ON-TRENT CABBIE

A racist dad hurled a torrent of vile abuse at a taxi driver before stealing his takings. It was a crime that stunned the whole of North Stafford- shire when a video of the disgraceful slurs aimed at the terrified cabbie went viral on social media. But it was football coach Samuel Egerton who was sobbing in court as he was jailed for his horrific actions in August 2019. The Stoke Sentinel reports that the 24-year-old took a taxi from Cheadle to Cheddleton at 2.30am and got in the front passenger seat. He haggled over the price and paid £13 before his language took a vile turn. He told the cabbie: “I am British. You better look after me, I am white’, and quizzed his victim about his religion and being a Muslim.” The defendant filmed his abuse towards the terrified cabbie and chanted, ‘England till we die’ and used a homophobic and racist slur against the driver before demanding his money back and threatening to smash his head in and take his taxi. The victim gave the defendant £19 before pressing an alarm to his base.

But the defendant realised what was happening and pulled on the handbrake causing the car to swerve before coming to a stop. He got out and ran off. The next day the defendant told a friend what he had done. Staffordshire Police initially assessed the case as being suitable for a community resolution. But the video of the incident was put on social media and the defendant was charged. In a victim statement the driver said the incident had shaken his confidence and he is terrified of

working nights. Egerton, from Cheddleton, pleaded guilty to robbery and racially aggravated fear or provocation of violence. The judge said the offence was so serious only immediate custody was appropriate. Judge Glenn said: “These are deeply unpleasant offences. The victim’s occupation as a taxi driver makes him vulnerable to the sort of behaviour you engaged in.” Egerton - who cried throughout the sentencing hearing - has been jailed for three years at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

THREE AND A HALF YEARS’ JAIL FOR ROBBER WHO TRIED TO STRANGLE LEEDS CABBIES

A robber has been jailed over two back seat attacks on taxi drivers in Leeds’ red light district. LeedsLive reports that James Cordingley carried out the attacks in Holbeck in the early hours of October 13, 2019. Shortly after 3am, a taxi driver stopped on Bridge Road to urinate and Cordingley and his partner Charlene Campbell jumped into his car. The victim returned to the car and told the couple to get out. Cordingley, who was sitting in the back seat, tried to strangle the driver with an item of clothing before running after him, putting him in a headlock and punching him in the face. The victim stopped a passing taxi driver who called police. Around an hour later, the pair and a third person got into a taxi outside the Clayton Hotel on Sweet Street and asked to be taken to Harehills. Cordingley, who again sat in the back seat, put his arms around the driver's neck. Campbell put her hand over the man’s mouth when he started to scream so the victim start- ed sounding his horn, drawing attention from other people.

The trio got out of the car and Campbell went round to the driver's side where she stole two mobile phones and cash. Leeds Crown Court heard Campbell dropped her jacket at the scene, which contained her DNA. Prosecutor Caroline Abraham said the victim of the first attack had to have a metal plate put in his jaw and suffers from anxiety, stress and sleeplessness as a result of the attack. She said the second victim took ten days off work after the incident because he felt unwell

and scared. Cordingley pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm in relation to the first incident. The couple, from Harehills, Leeds, pleaded guilty to robbery in relation to the second incident. Cordingley, 43, who had 24 previous convictions for 59 offences, was jailed for three-and-a-half years. Campbell, 37, who had five previous convictions for nine offences, was handed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, with a requirement to complete 40 days of rehabilitation activity.
