GREEN MEANS GO
WESTMINSTER GOES ELECTRIC WITH 1,000 ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGE POINTS
Westminster City Council, working in partnership with Siemens GB&I, installed the 1,000th EV charging point in April 2021 and are on track to deliver another 500 chargers by April 2022. The charging points range from 3kW to 50kW and have been installed at key residential and commercial locations across the city. The charging points are available to all users, making it easier for residents to switch to environmen- tally friendly transport solutions. Users are able to park their vehicles in dedi- cated EV bays and can charge for up to four hours between 8.30am and 6.30pm every day. Research from Siemens found that 40% of motorists said a lack of access to charging points had prevented them from switching to an electric vehicle sooner. To address this, Westminster
City Council has enabled residents to request for an EV charging point to be installed near their home using an online form. The Council will use this information to guide the installation of new chargers to ensure the programme is targeted at the areas with the great- est demand. The City of Westminster suffers with some of the worst air quality in the UK and the City Council declared a climate emergency in 2019. The Council’s City for All vision outlines plans for West- minster to become a carbon neutral council by 2030 and a carbon neutral city by 2040. Cllr Melvyn Caplan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for City Management said: “I am immensely proud that West- minster is the first local authority to reach this important milestone and
we’re not standing still - the council is already on track to deliver another 500 EV chargers by April 2022. “By working with Siemens, Westminster is leading the way on EV infrastructure and making it easier for residents to switch to greener transport.” Bernard Magee, Director Electric Vehicle Charging, Siemens GB&I said: “Siemens is proud to support our partner West- minster City Council in achieving this fantastic milestone. The great work at Westminster provides a charging infras- tructure blueprint to other local authorities on their own journeys to decarbonise transport and improve air quality across our towns and cities. “We’re now looking forward to the next phase, ensuring charging infrastructure continues to grow and benefit even more people across Westminster.”
OLA LAUNCHES ELECTRIC VEHICLE CATEGORY IN LONDON
Mobility company Ola is launching a new EV category on its ride-hailing platform, which will allow riders to specifically book rides in a fully electric vehicle. The category, called Ola EV, is a global first for the SoftBank-backed enterprise and was available across London from Thursday 13 May. According to Business Standard, over time, Ola which competes with US rival Uber, said this initiative will be rolled out to other cities around the world where Ola is operational. The Ola EV category will cost riders the same as a comfort category on the Ola app. Ola EV has 700 drivers across London and this is expected to grow quickly over the coming months. “Since launching in the UK, Ola has consistently looked to innovate and help solve the toughest mobility chal- lenges,” said Marc Rozendal, managing director of Ola UK. “The launch of Ola

EV is another great example, offering riders and drivers the opportunity to play their part in the journey to emis- sion-free rides.” This is the first step in a series of mea- sures Ola will make over the coming months, detailing its commitment to green transport networks, zero-emis- sion travel and further supporting the Mayor of London’s bold plans to improve air quality across the capital. Ola is incentivising drivers to use the new Ola EV category. It will offer a mar-
ket-leading zero per cent commission rate for the first three months for all- electric rides. Post the launch, Ola plans on extending offers through key partnerships to provide easy and affordable options for drivers and rid- ers to shift to fully electric vehicles. This driver-centric approach will help to significantly increase the number of fully electric PHVs in use and will also empower riders with an additional green option for their travel needs. “I am especially proud of the initiatives we are putting in place to help drivers make the switch to fully electric vehi- cles and that we have been able to do this at no extra cost to riders,” said Rozendal. “I am excited to launch this category as a global first for Ola and while Ola EV will start in London, we can’t wait to begin expanding it across the country and cities around the world.”
