BRIGHTON TAXI DRIVER’S NOSE BROKEN AND HEAD STAPLED AFTER VICIOUS GLASS BOTTLE ATTACK
A taxi driver was viciously attacked by a passenger who smashed his head with a bottle, breaking his nose. The Streamline Taxis driver, 28, from Brighton was so badly beaten he needed five staples in his head after he was attacked driving a young man and woman at 2am on 12 December. The driver said tensions began when he said he could not drive up an icy road due to it being too “dangerous and slippery”. The cabbie said: “The passenger said he wouldn’t pay me if I didn’t go up the road. He then jumped out the window head first so although I knew he was doing a runner, I went to check he was OK. “As soon approached he smashed a bottle into my face. I blacked out for a second, when I came back round, I felt another hit on my head. The glass smashed and my head was really badly bleeding. “The girl came out the car. He warned me that he had a knife and would stab me. I didn’t see a knife but he was reaching to his leg. They ran away towards Whitehawk Road and I went to A&E.” The self-employed driver and father-of-one, has not been able to

work since but says he might try to return next week. As he is not eligible for sick pay, Streamline Taxis and its drivers have rallied around and donated £500 to a fundraiser to help him which has now raised more than £800. The cabbie added: “He was really vicious. I could have easily died from this. The doctor said I had a very lucky escape here. “I feel like I should go back to work otherwise it could stay with me for longer. I will come back when I feel comfortable. “When this stuff happens, it’s really disheartening.” The driver, who studied Civil Engineering at Brighton University while working, hopes the man can be brought to justice. Andrew Peters, Director of Streamline Taxis, told PHTM: “We were all totally shocked that one of
our drivers was attacked whilst simply carrying out his job and there is absolutely no excuse for this happening. “This highlights the dangers of where a cab driver is in such close proximity to strangers and has no idea what state of mind they are in or what their intentions are. “Thankfully all Brighton & Hove licensed taxis/PHVs have council controlled CCTV to protect the driver and passenger and we understand the police will be using the captured images. “The driver is now off work whilst he recovers from his injuries and broken nose which is terrible at any time, but especially at this time of the year, and his driver colleagues at Streamline have generously donated over £500. “We have also set up a GoFundMe account so other cab drivers can donate which has shown to be very successful, such is the spirit of camaraderie within the local cab trade. This is also open to anyone else who would like to make a donation.” For more
