IN A CHANGING WORLD KEEPING TAXI DRIVERS FIT!

As part of our commitment to improving the physical health of our staff and local community, we were passionately involved with many fitness and health initiatives, working alongside the Derby County foundation.

Amongst the many projects we undertook in 2022, the ‘Walking Cricket’ session was amongst the most popular. Every week, we organised a fun session of cricket during quiet times giving a chance for our drivers to get to know each other as well as undertaking physical activity which is vitally important for all cabbies.

As taxi drivers are self-employed, they inevitably don’t have the same attachment to a taxi company that an employee may have. However, by organising fun activities that they will enjoy,

it

creates a sense of inclusiveness and community amongst drivers that will only enhance your taxi firm’s growth.

It was wonderful to see so many taxi drivers across Derby getting involved and improving their physical well-being through this group exercise. Many new friendships were also formed and we will look to continue to expand this activity next year and try to get more taxi drivers throughout our region involved in exercise.

Definitely organise some fun physical activities for your drivers and they will surely appreciate it.

LIVE WELL PROJECT WITH DERBY COUNCIL

Improving the health of our drivers has been a priority for us in recent years as we are aware of the physical impacts of driving a taxi and we’ve worked with many local and national health organisations in 2022.

Over the Covid period, we had unfortunately lost many drivers due to the virus and this spurred us on to create initiatives that will increase health awareness.

It’s an unfortunate reality that taxi drivers can have a higher risk of suffering health issues due to sitting stationary for the majority of the day as well as smoking and bad eating habits.

PHTM JANUARY 2023

Alongside various physical activities that we organise regularly, we also try to help raise health awareness amongst our fleet of drivers.

We worked with Derby Council who came to our offices regularly to provide free advice and support with various health aspects, including quitting smoking, dealing with high blood pressure and fighting the threat of diabetes 2, a common ailment in the taxi world.

Our taxi drivers were also eligible for free swimming lessons and we were delighted that many of our drivers took this up, some of whom were learning to swim for the very first time!

Show your drivers that you care by going above and beyond, especially when it comes to their health.

CONCLUSION

The end of a year and the start of a new one is always a time for reflection here at Albatross Cars and I strongly recommend that all taxi firms look back as well as planning ahead. Make a list of ideas with your team and try to get some feedback from your drivers on the kinds of things which they would like to see.

l Physical activities and health initiatives are two great areas to start.

l Are there any campaigns that you can under- take locally that show your drivers you care?

l What other benefits can you provide your drivers to entice them to stay with you?

To attract new drivers and keep your existing ones, it’s imperative that taxi/PH firms are proactive in providing benefits for their drivers and I hope that you’ve taken some inspiration from the examples above that have proven very successful for Albatross.

Happy New Year!
